I am preparing to finish my MiG 17. My question is (are?) How does it look using foil? How would I go about this? Is it worth the time and effort? I don’t like using the various metalizer paints because of the odor and I have had bad luck with this in the past. I have about a weeks worth of work left finishing this POS. I have had nothing but problems with this kit and I’m looking at using it as an experiment. If it turns out good it will go on the shelf if it don’t then it goes in the parts box. BTW This is the 1/48 Hobbycrap MiG 17F.
Roadkill,
There’s a thread on BMF in the techniques section.
I’ve used it on a 1/48 p-51d and I liked the result, but I found it to be quite a time consuming procedure. If you’re frustrated with this model, using foil on it will do nothing to lower your frustration level. Also if you’ve got the model more or less together, you may run into problems that would have been avoidable by applying the foil to some pieces before assembly. And, the stuff ain’t cheap and I found that I had a lot of wastage in the learning process.
Roadkill, I’ve built that kit, & I’ve built worse! It has it’s bad & good points. As for the paint finish, I finished mine using acrylic car paints. See if you can get car plastic primer & a can of Nissan silver. I find they are quick & relatively easy to use provided you follow basic safety rules. After decaling use an acrylic clear coat to protect the finish.
