Which of these is better to get in close, do freehand camo, detail stuff or does it matter? You guys know more than me!
Model. .it really does not matter which airbrush you use …you can use a expensive brand of airbrush and get excellent results. Then again …you can get the same results from a cheep harbor freight airbrush. .it’s how you dial or adjust it .skill for one …it’s not the airbrush. …it’s the one who operates the gun …I have done freehand camouflage and in close jobs with a $15 dolor badger 350 knock off.
I like the badger 155 anthem my self. .but paasche is and always will be my go to airbrush. My [2cnts].
5-high
that is true 5, but Im not so blessed with talent! i need the help from the airbrush to make up for my lack of skill. Just wondered what people thought.
I have the Sotar and it works fine for detailing but I also have other AB’s. IMHO I think the Krome with 0.2mm needle/nozzle or the 2-in-1 (with .3mm nozzle as well) would be the way I’d go. I’m alway hesitant about the very tiny, tiny nozzle on the Sotar when I clean it - don’t drop it or you’ll have a hard time finding it. See Don’s site for picture of its size

The Krome also has a tiny nozzle though.
The Sotar and Krome needles and tips are basically the same. You can interchange them. The trigger assemblies are the same. The main difference is the feel. The Sotar has a shorter nose so you can get closer to your work, and it is lighter and smaller. Also, some people like the smaller cup. A skilled airbrusher could do the same detail with either one.

I think Bick and Don have hit the most important issue spot on, it’s less about the airbrush, than it is the requirements of the user. The AB’s I have come to favor for finest detail work are the badger 100G, Paasche VJR and Iwata M1, all with the finer needles and tips. Really, the differences between them are rather insignificant, the major issue is the distance from trigger to tip, shorter is best for me.
Don loaned me his Sotar once, as well as it worked I felt a bit uncomfortable with taking care of it, those tiny bits are very easy to damage or lose, and really expensive if replacement is needed. Those that favor the Sotar love them. They can do some really fine work, I guess it comes down to what do you really need and what will work best for you, on a routine basis.
I recommend buying no more airbrush than you will actually use and feel at home with. When I say my VJR or 100G works as well for me as the Sotar, it’s not about the AB’s, it’s about how well I can use them. No need for a Ferrari, if I’m only going to Safeway.
Patrick
The brand of gun will not make you better, but a detail fine needle will be what you shoot for up close, and then some practice. My go to brush is a Talon, but I have been using a Paasche VL and a Badger 150 since I was in High School, and I still own and use these same guns.
If your dead set on buying the Krome or the Sotar, either will get the job done. Badger has great customer service and I recommend Badger on that quality alone.
got a neo.
