Dealing with the Canadian ban on model paints.

It seems like all the primers everyone recommend are banned now and I will have to find a suitable alternate. Please advise.

Some modelers use Rustoleum primer in the rattlecan,or maybe it can decanted for AB use.
Or how about Vallejo products?
I keep finding stuff, how about Badger Stynlrez

I’m in the same boat. My go to is the Rustoleum spray cans. One benefit is that you can also get their paint/primer in base colours. I’ve not had any issues with using these, although you need to be light on the coats to avoid coving details as it’s a bit thicker than traditional hobby primers.

Health Canada has gone overboard. Tamiya rattle cans are banned for unlisted ingredients. Even the acrylic thinner X-20A has been banned because it lacks a child proof top. Never mind that you can buy isopropyl alcohol for thinning Tamiya paints and the drug store bottle tops are not child proof. My local hobby shop was still selling its stock of Tamiya acrylic thinner months after the ban…so I stocked up, lack child proof top be damned. I am still able to get Vallejo primers in rattle cans and in bottles. They are a bit expensive but they cover well. I have noticed though that when brush painting details on a primed model Tamiya paints sometimes have a hard time sticking to the Vallejo primer.

Welcome to the forum! Nova Scotia is well known to me, though I have yet to visit — I am from the head of Lake Superior and grew up in a maritime town, and Stan Rogers is close to my heart, though he died the year I was born. Someday I’ll see Halifax!

I had no idea there were these issues in Canada.

I generally don’t prime with rattlecans, just airbrush, and only acrylics.

The Vallejo primers work well for me in most cases, and spray very easily, though they do not sand well until fully cured which can require weeks, or use of a paint drying box of some kind.

Are Stynylres primers available? I have had good luck with those as well.

I too know Nova Scotia pretty well. It is my favorite province in Canada and Halifax is my favorite city. My youngest son (with me in my avatar) went to university in Antigonish and paramedic school in Halifax. He lived in Westville working as a paramedic and serving in the Nova Scotia Highlanders. That gave me the excuse to visit often. He has since moved to Alberta for a career change, but he and his girlfriend plan to someday return.
