Back from the past?

Ok, here’s one to think about on a rainy Monday.

You have the power to bring back from the past ONE piece of military equipment and put it into production. You can fix defects and add equipment. What do you pick and what do you add???

Example: An Me-262 with Twin M-61 Vulcan guns

This ones easy TSR2 what defects? tacan, loran, tiald, gps, gbu’s winders ect…Gregers

Greg,

Now if we could just get that undercarriage to retract, we could call it an F111!

LMAO!

P-38 with GAU-2 20mm Vulcan, turboprop engines and Laminar Flow wings.

Bf-109G6/AS with 3xJumo004 and 1000rounds of MK-108 And 10xMK-108 gunpod and may have 2xJDAM range for 1500 miles 10cm ammored[how can it fly???]

The Valkyrie, for me, please!

I agree with DJ, I’d love to see a Valkerie at an airshow. But I’ve got to think if you built a new version (same airframe, modern weapons and electronics) the only plane that could survive today is the Phantom. I know some of you are saying, “but the Phantom is still in use.” I know, I know. But I think it could still hold its own as an air superiority fighter with modern guts. It is one of those designs that only comes along once in a lifetime that is perfect. The a/c version of the Model T or the a/c version of Levi’s if you prefer. It is the benchmark, a timeless classic, always in style.

I agree with gregers! The TSR.2 is a great choice, but I think the CF-105 would be a good choice also. Modern avionics, a vulcan cannon and that plane would be taking care of business.[8D]

Gotta be a tricked up Avro Vulcan.

Composites to reduce all up weight, thereby increasing range and payload, Glass cockpit MFDs, LINS/GPS, Mode 4 IFF (we really hate those blue on blue moments!) 20,000 lbs of PGMs or a couple of MOABs for offense, ASRAAMs and ALARMs for self defence, a decent ECM suite and some radar absorbent materials and paint (Yeah, black paint!).

I could be the British Dale Brown! LOL!

Hi All,
1st for nwilliams, your wish was granted about 10 yrs ago McAir along with
a company (I don’t remember the name), Offered to reman F-4s w/new engines and avoinics but everyone wanted NEW stuff(F-15s,16 etc and they couldn’t sell.
2nd for my choice Keep building F-14Ds and workup Es,Fs and Gs
Also I alays wondered what a P-38 would do with RR Merlins some smothing
of the airframe!!!
Good Hunting,
rdzpress

B-58, with updated avionics, composite materials in the airframe and powered by F-110’s!

How about a Ta-154 Moskito with counter rotating turbo props. With a pair of vulcans in the fuselage[8D][}:)]

I also agree with nwilliams on the F-4. With up graded engines and radar, like the ISDF, it would be an un-beatable weapon system. With the retirement of the F-4G, it left the USAF with out a dedicated Wild Weasel acft. The F-16 just can’t carry what the F-4 could carry. Sure, the F-16 can turn on a dime and give you nine cents change back, but the F-4 could shoot down a 16 before it could get in range to do any damage to the Phantom. For me it will always be Phantoms Phorever Phrom a Phormer Phantom Phixer.

I would also vote for the Phantom. It was a fighter pilots fighter. Air, ground, defense suppression, photo, tanker, FAC, nukes. Lighten the airframe w/composites, re-engine, redo avionics(shoot Cuttler-Hammer). Ain’t nothing like the Mach-2, bent-wing bug-sucker!

The Spruce Goose with an X-15 rocket plane attached under the wing! Awesome site - for a mile anyway.

I’ll go with the F-8 Crusader with upgraded avionics and engines.
In it’s original state, it could go head to head with almost anything flying today.
With the upgrades, it’d be unbeatable.

When you’re out of F-8’s, you’re out of fighters

A-6E Intruder with composites, avionics, and all the new goodies! Oh, yeah, and add a 30mm ADEN gun pod to the right wing!

We just got done mentioning the F-4 in class. She was a good old bird, and can still do a lot. I would also like to see the Tomcat continue in fleet service. It can do some things that the F-18 simply can’t.

The old Ch-47 Chinook in it’s “Guns-A-Go-Go” configuration with 20 mm Vulcans, TOW missiles and 5-in. rockets with ‘nails’ (you old hands will know what I’m talking about!). - Ed

Got to go with Gregers on this one it has to be the TSR2. As for improvements, you can’t inprove on perfection. If the Government (in its INFINATE(?) wisdom) had not been spineless enough to stand up to the US and continue trials the TSR2 would have still been flying today. Gulf War TSR2 anyone?..wheres that Dynavecter kit gone…
