B-58 asia camo

My R/G B-58 hustler is almost done.I chose the asian camo listed in the instructions.I thought I’d free hand the pattern. It came out alright for a first attempt.Glad to be seeing the end of this one as the kit itself is pretty poor.Lots of fit problems all over.I’d love to post some pics but I’m not sure how.Would love to get everyones opinion on this one.
As a finished kit,I think it’s a nice change from the usual NMF Hustlers I always see.

Wow, I sure would love to see that Hustler! Actually, I have never seen a model of the B-58 finished in SEA camo. To upload a pic, look in the Community Assistance forum. The top two sticky threads cover this subject. When I upload a pic, i use Rongeorge’s site. www.rongeorge.com
I’m having a bit of trouble accessing the upload section at the moment. Maybe someone else can assist you there.

You can always go to www.photobucket.com. The site is free and you can always give them a donation if you want to. Plus you get a lot of space to download pics. Hope this helps. Oh yeah I would like to see the Hustler in SEA camo also.

I thought the B-58 had been “retired” by Vietnam! I’ll have to dig out my instructions. I have several of the old Monogram kits but not a new re-released Revellogram. Very interesting.

FYI: The B-58 was retired in January, 1970

Krax, I’ve seen two models finished up this way, looks pretty groovy! So I’m looking forward to seeing how this one turns out. Here’s the old Monogram small-scale kit finished this way: Monogram 1/121 B-58 Hustler (BTW, this is the SAC scheme, not the SEA scheme)

Now, if I could only find a photo of a Project Bullseye B-58 in any kind of camo scheme, I’d be able to die a happy dude…

It’ll take a miracle to find one, I think…

Fade to Black…

I never knew they came in anything other than NMF. Would love to see some pics posted

The Aerograph 4 book on B-58 by Jay Miller states that after years of research and interviewing many people in all levels of B-58 operations from SAC commanders to crew cheifs; no aircraft was ever painted in camo paint of any kind. The book includes a drawing of the proposed scheme(the one in the 1/121 link) . This is an outstanding book with lots of history, development, detail pictures, operations, test beds, a history of every plane and much more.

some one in the forom tipped me off to www.alanger.us its web site that allows you to post pics of your models and share them, best part is its free. when you have a pic posted you want to share just copy and past the link in the thread. Not as nice as the folks who use RonGeorges site to post thier pics but I havent figured that monster out yet so I make do with what I can. Heck for all I know you could probably use this site to post your pics like every one else.

Good luck and cant wait to see this Hustler

Thanks for the pics Steve-O. The SAC scheme makes a bit more sence for a bomber than the SEA camo scheme, but that would look cool as well. More of a ‘what if’ though. That old kit there seems to consist of about half plastic, half filler! Kudos to Scott van Aken for finishing that bear!

Sorry guys,I was going to try to post some pics with all the help you provided. In my haste to get at it,I knocked the digicam off the desk . Darn thing shattered like glass(wonder how model glue works on that).I may have to do the old scanned polaroid trick . As far as the camo scheme , I had read that there were 3 A/C painted in that scheme as a sort of test run . The scheme was never put into service . I will try to look up where I found that info and post the source . I like the way it turned out as it is a nice change from the usual nmf B-58.I went with the colours and markings in the instructions with the R/G kit . I took some poetic licence with the exact colours and substituted the R/G interpretation for the F/S colour listed for this scheme.
I hope to get some pics up soon . I’d like to hear what you all think of it .

OK here we go.The pics are pretty bad but we’ll try it anyway. Thanks to everyone for the help.I placed my 1/48 C-47 beside the Hustler just for a size comparison.Wow is this thing big.
I still have a couple of small things to finish and a bit of weathering to complete this one.
Comments welcome.

Wow! That is one wicked looking airplane! The camo scheme really suits it. Nice one! [bow]

I have the same kit in my stash to build ‘one day’ yet all the photo’s I have are the bland NMF, or with Orange and White panels, a big model when finished.
I might do mine in a similar schemme when I get to start on it.

The plane looks great in this scheme but I have to agree with MOGGIE. The scheme was proposed but no aircraft were ever painted in it. I have searched for a pic of one in this scheme for over 15 years and have never been able to find any documentation and all I have read agree that they were never done. It is one of those Urban Legends (or would that be Military Urban Legend?) since no evidence has surfaced. If you can find the info and any pics of a real one done this way, please post it as I would love to be proved wrong on this.

I agree that the scheme was never adopted nor have I ever seen a pic of one done in camo. The closest that I have come is reading that there were 3 done in camo for testing.I am still trying to find where I read that To post the source. For any who wish,I could scan the page in my instructions that shows the pattern and colours.
I admit that the scheme is not by any means common but it sure looks cool.Reminds me of days of old being at the CFB Trenton airshow when it started to pour rain. They took down the ropes around the Avro Vulcan so people had some shelter from the rain. There was lots of room under that thing for shelter.
Thanks for the comments and maybe we should offer a ransome for any pics or info on a real camo B-58.Sound like a challenge ?

That challenge has already been issued many times over within the modeling, historical and aviation enthusiast communities, with negative results.

As to the number of aircraft alleged to have carried a scheme of any sort, the sources which I’ve come across range from one to three, with most of these sources being on the net. And we all know that you can believe everything you see on the net, right? LOL

Also, the story that the scheme was applied to at least one aircraft and then removed as soon as possible because of the ‘secrecy’ of the project (Operation Bullseye) just plain don’t hold water. Matter of fact, that story is laughable at best. Supposedly the story comes from a pilot who flew the camo jet and has agreed to ‘tell all’ on condition of anonymity. Hmmmm…

It’s ‘evidence’ like this which makes me lean toward the conclusion that it never happened.

However, a scheme for the B-58 wasn’t merely proposed, it was, indeed, offcially authorised; it showed up in TO 1-1-4’s, and it doesn’t get more official than that. Unfortunately, my copy of this document dates from the late 70’s, so no Hustler. [V]

Anyhoo, a photo of a camouflaged B-58 is among the few true Holy Grails for which those who have an interest in things with wings have been searching for quite some time. So, regarding said photo, I said it once and I’ll say it again:

It’ll take a miracle to find one, I think…

Fade to Black…

Nope, B-58 was never finished anything but NMF, maybe with some dayglo panels now and then. But ther’s no reason we can’t paint a model to see what it would have looked like!

Thanks for the info Blackwolf. This sounds like the most logical version yet.I guess a camo B-58 is just another of those wonderful “what if’s”.Too bad though,it sure looks cool.I chose the camo scheme just because it was different and I’m glad I did.If anyone wants a copy of the pattern, just let me know and I can scan the illustration in the instructions.
I’ll also try to get some better pics up soon.
Thanks for all the replies.

Great looking Hustler. [tup][tup][tup]
