B-36 kit

Ive found this on ebay. I would buy it but I dont know anybody heard of it. Is it good?

Haven’t built it, but saw some reviews…

I believe it has raised panel lines, and rather sparse detail in the cockpit. It is re-released by Revell a few years ago.

The fit seems OK. Shape is very good.

I think it would be better that you buy the newer Revell kit as it has much better decals than the old Monogram kit.

Cheers,

Jürgen

I have the Revell re-issue from a few years back.

I agree with Flyingraptor. The interior details are a bit sparse. I got as far as building and painting the cockpit and landing gear. I built them straight out of the box. I have since moved onto other projects…Ill finish it someday (haha) It has been sitting in the box since then.

As far as I know it is the only 1/72 B-36 out there. And it is BIG! I mocked it together once or twice.

Whether it says Revell or Monogram, it is the same kit and the only one out there in 1/72nd, mold is a little over twenty years old

You can pick this kit up at any hobby shop or a Hobby Lobby I’m sure for a lot less. Unless you are buying this kit for a collectors item its way too high. I agree with the others about the rest though

I built one when it first came out. At the time it was advertised as the largest plastic aircraft model in history. I recall it was a pretty typical Monogram build: straight forward kit to put together, raised panel lines, but otherwise good detail for the scale.

Revell suggested retail on this kit is $103.00 and discount pricing puts it around $88.00 as a best price brand new. It is freaking huge – twice the size of a 1/48 B-17. The new release does have better decals than the older boxing but the plastic is the same either way.

Here are some pictures of the Monogram B-36. Your question inspired me to pull the box out and say, “hey, I think I will build this soon…”

Anyway, the kitty is for comparison and does not come in the box!

$103? I think that’s for the Revell Germany release, which are always more expensive than the RM releases in the US. I looked at a couple of Squadron catalogs and the B-36 was listed at $104 retail in the 2004 catalog, but only $93 in the 2005 catalog.

The latest Squdron catalog has the old B-52 listed from both RM and RG. The German release is $52.50 list and the RM kit is $44 list. In 1/48, the B-1 is currently released by RG for $93 list and the B-29 is out from RM for $44 list. The B-29, B-1, B-52, and B-36 all come in the 27 inch long box when released by Revell Monogram.

I would expect that when the B-36 comes around to an RM release again, it will probably be in the $40 to $50. I found it in the 2001 Squadron catalog. The US release back then was listed at $36.25.

This is actually a pretty decent kit and has been said above, it is the ONLY one in 1/72. The kit contains a bunch of very small bombs which are intended to be photo flash bombs for the reconnaissance version of the big beast. The decals that come in the Monogram kit are for versions of the plane that cannot be built straight from the box. They take some minor modifications to the tail radar and the bump antennas under the belly.

Pretty much everything said before. Raised panel lines, minor inaccuracies (get out the references!), and the typical Mongram wing to fuselage joint- Terrible, with a capital T. Interior cockpit detail gets the job done, and the bomb bay is decently detailed if you decided to make the recon version. If you decided to go bomber, you’ll need to keep the bomb bay doors closed, fill and sand the seams, and rescribe a new set of doors. The bay is in the totally wrong spot to make a bomber.

This all being said, though, it can be built up into a stunning kit. (At least, I think so. [;)])
