B-24 progress pics

I’ve been moving along at a snail’s pace, but now I have something new to show on my B-24 (1/48). When I painted fuselage I held it in the middle, so that’s why you can see the primer. The tail assembly was kind of tricky with the clear parts. I also painted the wings. Now I need to paint the second coat. Looks kinda funny with all that stuff crammed into all the openings.

And here’s the tail. It was tricky with the clear parts, so I painted everything separately and now I’m attaching the tail.

It was on the tail that the paint was acting weird. It got darker and coarser. So I sanded it down and painted over it. I think it helped a little.

Looking good so far Aviator. Keep us posted.

Regards, Rick

Nice lookin’ job so far Aviator.

That joint at the tail was the biggest problem I had when I built this kit. Looks like you did a good job filling it. The engine nacelles were kinda tough too, but they didn’t give me as much trouble as that tail.

Did you do much work on the interior detail ?

Chris

Yes, for several months I worked on the interior. It turned out Ok I guess. I did a lot of learning. Unfortunately, I didn’t take any pics.[:(!][banghead][banghead][soapbox] I thought it looked pretty good anyway.[8D] After its finished and I unplug all the openings, I’ll try to get a pic of the inside. The nacelles were tricky. Sanding, putty, sanding and more putty; that part took forever. I’m happy with it though. I can still tell where the joint is, but after all that work, I DONT CARE ANYMORE! Just don’t look too close.[:I]

Looking good so far Aviator. Keep us posted.

Looks good! I’ll post something about your salt problem on the other thread…

Progress looks good so far-keep us posted.

Darren.

Hi Aviator

Doing the exact same model and am about where you are after much time on interior. Best of lcuk with finish.

Thanks everybody![:)] I’ll be anxious to see how it turns out too.

Looking good from what I can see. I’ve got 2 of these babies in my stash at home - a J and a D. I’ve got plenty of aftermarket parts for them too, so they’ll be a mammoth project, and one i’m not even going to attempt until I’ve moved into my new workshop (once I’ve built it).

I’m looking forward to seeing some closeup shots of the interior, I can’t see if the bomb-bay’s open… I’ll be leaving at least one of mine open, and have got a load of resin 500lb US bombs to fill them up. The Flightpath PE set provides plenty of detail for the bay itself, but I’m sure I’ll be adding to that…

One question I’ve gotta ask - have you test fitted the wings yet? I’ve heard from others that they’re a bear to fit, and was wondering whether you’ve considered/rectified this before painting. I read somewhere that they go together much easier if you shave off the rear “tabs”. I think I’ll be making a rudimentary jig for mounting my wings - I’d hate to see a B-24 with wobbly wings after all that effort!

Keep pumping out the pics. I’ll be watching this one with interest. btw - if you need any reference material, I’ve got an armfull of books on the B-24, so just holler [;)]

Nice progress Aviator, keep it up!

They will be open. Right now I have them glued on with white glue. I needed something to cover the openings, so I decided to use the doors. After I’m finished, they’ll come off.

Maybe I just don’t know how they’re supposed to look, because they look fine to me.

Thanks for the offer, I may take you up on that. It may be a wile before I get back to it though.

I have a B-24D as well. BTW how easy is it to mistake a B-24D for a Lancaster?

BTW Aviatior which color of Olive Drab did you use Faded OD or regular OD?

Mikey - I would guess it isn’t impossible, as they have the same basic format from below, namely long narrow fuselage, twin boom tail, 4 engine nacelles. I’d imagine that from the ground, or in the heat of battle it’s doable, but if you have a B-24 and a Lanc together, they’re unmistakably different.

On the OD front, I’d start the job with vanilla OD, and probably use a few different shades for weathering of panels, or just simulating re-painting. A B-24 in OD wasn’t the best paintjob in the world after a tour of duty, if the pictures are to be believed.

That’s one massive bird. Good progress [:)]

Mike wouldn’t Testors Model Master Faded OD be a closer match to Vanilla OD? But seeing pics of B-24’s they would sometimes be in a few shades of Olive Drab due to sun Bleaching and lots of wing and tail surfaces would have heavy weathering to the point where whole sections of panels would be completely bare.

looking good!

cheers,
pisis

Nice job so far

Very nice, when i did my B-25 (the tails are similar) and yes, the clear parts are a pit trickey.
