b-17 support equipment?

I’m building a 1:48 scale diorama of a 91st BG b-17g on the hardstand. I have the bomb cart from that kit and the tractor from the b-24, but I need some other stuff, such as engine hoists, crates, barrels, fuel trucks, that sort of thing. I also need some ground crew figures. I would prefer that any suggestions would be under $10 apiece, but I’m getting desperate[:D], so I might take anything. I also need 91st BG decals (also under $10), because I REALLY[xx(] screwed up the kit ones. These can be natural metal or olive drab (preferred: I’m not that good at natural metal yet[swg][soapbox]

Hi Josh. You need to go to your library and find some books on eighth bomber command and search out photos of ground support equipment. You might also check out the site WWII in Color. You might find something there. Good luck with your project from Tacoma. Joe

thanks, joe[:D]. I live in a town with a population of under 300, and none of the libraries in my area have any kind of reference material. Can anyone tell me some more reference sites, though[?]

Well, I just ran a google search on the 91st BG and had alot of hits. I was looking for references on “Chow Hound” assigned to the 322nd sqn. (I assume you’re doing the same mod?) Hope this helps!!
As for the decals, try contacting Revell & ask them, you might get lucky

Here are some links to help you out.
First is Gaso.line, a company in France that stocks a bunch of 48th scale stuff.

Next is Matador Models out of England but their stuff is a lot pricier.

And this site is devoted to 48th scale vehicles. Make sure you check out their links section.

Accurate miniatures has a really nice WWII Armament and Ground Service Equipment set that includes depth charges, bombs, rockets, torpedo, bomb cart, and tractor available on the Great Models website for $14.95. Minus the depth charges and torpedo this would work well.

Great Models also has a Tamiya Jerry Can and Oil Drum Set that includes drum cans, Jerry cans, bags and other equipment for use with 1/48 MMV series models. Comes with both Allied and German versions. This set is $6.95.

And Verlinden has a radio/runway jeep in 1/48 but the cost escapes me.

thanks everybody! I haven’t checked out those sites yet, but I will soon. I might do Chow hound, but I was looking more for Hikin’ for home or man O’ war II. I’m pretty much looking for a few different A/C from the 322nd BG, because I might want to expand my dio in the future.[:D]

www.squardon.com or greatmodels.com has these decals I believe… One thing I’ve discovered about the 322nd BS / 91st BG is, they removed the astrodome which was replaced with a flat piece of plexiglas to give the pilot an unobstructed view from the cockpit.
Keep the razors sharp & have fun … Eddie[8-]

THanks for that little bit of info! where did you find that out?

If you end up needing the Chowhound decals, Ill be more than happy to send them to you. Someone made Man O War 2 decals. I just dont remember who, but ill check on that.

I believe I found it on the Mighty eigth Air Force message board. www.com-web.com/
or on the 91st BG site. http://www.91stbombgroup.com/ There’a alot of info here. I have a book :Fortress of the skies" by Martin Bowman which is a good reference on B-17 history. Lot of color plates & so far, the 322nd a/c [shown] were w/out the astrodome.

EP48156 Eagle Strike Decals "Attention Bombers pt. 1 $8.96 has Pistol Packin’ Mama & Little Patches
EP48157 Eagle Strike Decals " " pt.2 $7.92 has Man O War II & Just Plain Lonesome
found at squadron.com

One thing you need to remember is that most activities took place at definate points in time during the preperation for a mission. In other words if the maintenance folks are performing any type of major maintenance (cowling off, removing engine etc) then there would not be any fueling or bomb loading being performed at the same time. The same is true if the fuelers or armorers are doing their job. It boils down to question of safety and SOP.

Thanks for all that info, guys!

Yer welcome![:D] You should find some reference books on the B-17. Here’s a few that I have that I think are helpful:
“Fortress of the Skies” by Martin Bowman (Military Book Club)
Aero Detail 19 “Boeing B-17G” (RZM Imports-found at squadron.com) WARBIRD tech series B-17
& of course the Squadron Signal Publications "In Action & Walk arounds

Thanks! I already have the walk-around and in-action books, but I’ll check out those other ones!
