Academy/Minicraft has a ‘G’ in its catalogue.

thanx, domi !
do they have a website (silly qiuestion, no doubt) ?

I believe the Academy website is www.modelrectifier.com

Frosty,
This is the old Crown kit and is very basic for detail. Is this for your Tuskegee dio?
If it is a shadow box dio with the Fort in the background, should work OK. I built this
for our clubs display for the Hill AFB Museum (1/144 models of all of the museums
aircraft so they can use them to figure out where they will place their planes when the remodel). Kit went together fine but really lacks the details. Off top of my head, top turret has the wrong shape and the waist gunners positons aren’t opened or glassed. Not sure of the overall accuracy as wasn’t important for the project, just the size. Here is a pic.

Thanks for the link and details guys… I’ve never built this kit so I can not give you any comments on it, Frosty. The only one in the 1/144 Academy series of bombers I’ve built is the… Betty… LOL

Yup! Academy’s got a 1/144 B-17. Academy/Minicraft"s got even a 1/240. I have both but only the 1/144 kit’s been started and half-finished. The detail’s very basic. Here’s what I’ve done when I stopped:

repositioned nose windows
inscribed crew nose hatch
repositioned starboard(right) waist window and added clear glass
inscribed aft fuselage crew door
corrected tail dorsal fin contour
Corrected observer’s window(mid-section/starboard)
inscribed bomb bay doors
added wing panel lines
replaced 0.50 cal.MGs with needles
corrected contour of engine nacelles
add cockpit rear windows
corrected shape of propeller blades

I am supposed to do work on the gear details when my interest shifted to another project. Maybe I’ll go back at it one these days.

thanx 4 the replies, good people !
the B-17 is 4 my Tuskeegee Airmen project…
i hope that the minicraft G model will b ok for a background forced perspective effect, so detail isn’t 2 important.
i ordered the academy 1/72 P-51c (red tails) & the 1/144 B-17 yesterday,
so i’ll b asking plenty of silly questions soon enough ! [:o)]
(haven’t done any planes yet except 4 a couple of snap-tite kits)

YAY! more people modeling the B-17! [:D] I think i did the 1/144 Academy kit a while back, and it was a decent enough kit ( though, I still prefer this plane in 1/72). Are you using a shadow box for this dio? can’t wait to help on your red tail dio! [:)]

hey, shrikes!
i’d love 2 do the b-17 in 1/72, but the dio would b HUGE !
i’m thinking shadow box w/ the ‘stang up front & the B-17 in back…
any advice, info etc will b greatly appreciated, since i’ve never done
anything like this before…[:)]
should b fun, tho’ !
thanx,

My friend lent me a shep paine book with a whole section on dioramas and shadow boxes… I’ll read up on it for 'ya! [:)] I saw an interesting sort of forced perspective shadow box in a store window once… it was different scale zeros as if on their way to pearl harbour, viewed from above with the larger ones in the foreground and the smaller scales in the back. [:D]

Frosty,
The Shep Paine Dio book is definitely a good ref not just for shadow boxes but other dio’s and model building in general.
I saw an article in an old FSM showing a shadow box dio of 4 F-14’s escorting a hijacked 737 using several different scale models. It was a night dio so had the aircraft lighting done. Really cool if you can find it.
