I know the Quickboost set is for B-24’s, but i am thinking this may just be bacuse of how many there are, just as with the gun barrel sets. Would the cannisters be the same for both aircrfat. Thanks in advance.
I think your supposition that those are O2 tanks is correct, but without seeing where they mount in the kit cannot confirm that. I dont know if the B-17 and B-24 used the same size O2 tanks, but even if they did not, only a real nit picker would know the difference if they saw them in your build. Those Quickboost ones look very nice. And yes, they should be yellow.
Thanks stik. I would post a pic, as i need to post them for my GB updates anyway. But i brought the camera home but forgot the lead [bnghead]
There are 4 mounts in the PE set, each holding 3 tanks. One is on the right in the bomb aimers position. And 3 at the rear of the cockpit, 2 on the right, one on the left. I know from photos there should also be some in the rear, i have seen an image of one on top of the ball turret mount. But while the eduard set has alot of PE for the cockpit, bomb aimers position, bomb bay and radio operaters area, the waiste gun positions are a bit sparse. So i am thinking i can add some back there from looking at pics.
O, nice, thanks stik. The PE set i have is for an E/F. I think most is the same. Those 2 sets of 3 look to be right under the top turret, just where the ones on mine are, so thats perfect.
I am a bit concerned that the ammo tins for the waiste position might not be right, but i am happy enough to live with that on this one.
Thanks for those pics, they are going to help alot. And i think i will get that Quickboost set.
These tanks can be replicated using styrene rod of the correct diameter or pay a visit to your local old fashion pharmacy and see if they can match up a empty pill capsule to the approximate size. They might even have the correct color too.
Thanks for the tip Hawkeye. I will keep that in mind as i ahve a few B-24’s and B-17’s to build. I have to order a few things from hannants anyway, and these ones are not expensive.
You’re very welcome Bish. IIRC on the ammo bins for the waist gunners, originally they were smaller cans attached directly to the gun mount. Later they were replaced with larger bins on the fuselage sides and fed the guns via flexible chutes. So it all depends on what time period and block of production batch you are replicating in your build.
Ye, the PE set had the smaller cans. Though as there only seems to be 3 for each gun, i wasn’t 100% certain they were ammo tins. Don’t seem they would hold that much ammo given the size of .50 cal rounds. I have pics of E’s with the small tins and G’s with the large wooden ammo bins. I know my F hag the small done above the bomb aimers position so i think that makes it a later one. But i am happy to settle on the smaller cans either way for this one.
Thanks for confirming that about those small cans.
Stik, just wanted to say a big thank you for the help on this. It turned out that the Eduard PE wasn’t entirely accurate. They had the tank placement slightly wrong, and the size they gave for the oxygen tanks was wrong. The quickboost PE set came with two sizes of tanks. The Eduard set had the small ones in those holders, yet the schematic you posted as well as the photos clearly show the larger tanks. So i removed the PE and attached the tanks accordingly. It also gave me the location of a couple of the small tanks. Of course, i didn’t fit the entrire oxygen system, but i was able to fir all the tanks that can/might be seen once together.
Also, the photos you gave me the link to helped me scratch the mount for the ball turret, which i really wanted to do as it and the oxygen tank attached to it can just be seen through the waiste positions.
So thanks again for all your help. Its made a real fifefrence to the insdie of my 17F, and really filled it out. Theres some pics on both the Mighty 8th GB and the Too many Props GB.
