i ahve decided to build an Avro Arrow for the prototypes and paper projects gb. i once heard that there was a version that would launch some sort of missle into space before the russians or americans. is this true? does anyone have more info on this? what did it look like?
i was thinking it would be cool to build my arrow like this
The Arrow you’re talking about was strictly on paper and it was the proposed MK.3.
Beyond the ability to air launch a missile into space, it was also planned to be able to cruise at just over mach 3 (yes, cruise!)
Anyway, I’m not sure on the web where you can find photos of the drawings or wind tunnel models, but it had huge engine intakes that bore more than a passing resemblance to the swept forword intakes on the F-105 Thud.
Is this anything like the B-58 proposal? 4 missiles were mounted under B-58 55-660 and launched into space with moderate success. If anyone wanted to do it, you could use a slightly modified spent M-16 casing (surplus stores?) for the missile. Can’t wait to see the Arrow t34!
so it was an actual plan! thanks for the help guys. i have alot of spare missles from previous aircraft builds. looks like i have alot of work to do[:)]
The way some Canadians remember it, a derivative of the Arrow itself could have eventually been a spacecraft…
In the Arrowheads, “The Story Of The Avro Arrow From Its Evolution To Its Extinction”, The Boston Mills Press 1980, there is a brief mention of a study of an anti-ICBM missile for the Arrow - “For some time AVRO considered the possibility of carrying an anti-missile missle on the Arrow. This would provide a mobile launching platform, giving better weapon mobility, and dispersion.” No other drawings, description or information.
Click on the image of the Avro Arrow and scroll to the bottom of the following page and click on “Arrow Fantasy Art” There’s a batch of digital artwork focusing on the Arrow including a few images of the MK.3 so you can get some idea of what it was supposed to look like.
I have a vcr movie “The Arrow” which showed a concept for using the Arrow as a missile or satellite launcher. In the movie the A/C ,in model form, is shown to be rolled over and the missile is launched on an inclined rail deployed from the bay. This was presented as a concept idea for rescuing the program after it was canceled.
It’s too bad the Arrow never made it into production. That would have had long lasting postitive effects for Canada’s aircraft industry. I bet if it did, it would have spurred the Americans on to continue the F-108 Rapier. I never realized before how much the Arrow and Rapied were similar looking but I suppose that’s due to similar requirements.
