AV-8B Harrier cockpit colors...

I know I have talked to a few of you devil-dogs out there before, (I was a USN Doc that got the fine opportunity to serve with you guys — 2nd Mar Div, 24th MAU, and 26th MEU(SOC) the MAU thing dates me huh?)

I am researching cockpit colors, mainly for the side panels on the AV-8B… so far nothing… I’ve found a lot of examples on the UK version but nothing on interior shots of the USMC version… the instructions have Dk Ghost Grey as the main color, but both side panels they say to paint flat black… I know on the original Harrier they were grey with smaller black inset panels into them for instruments… any advice? I’d like to do it right… only pics I have from my cruises of the II’s are exterior shots of course, flight line shots…

Just curious on your take…

I just did the Monogram 1/48 kit and had the same problem. These were the best I could find:

The other source (that I already had) was a 1991 World Air Power Journal (Vol. 6) that showed the AV-8B instrument panel, and the FRS. Mk1 (analog) cockpit in full color. Why shots of the AV-8B are so scarce is beyond me. Good luck!

thanks gregbale! I know… I’ve been able to find WWI - WWII cockpits, find the color schemes for some really ODD builds… but you would think this one was a nat’l secret… I appreciate it!

I’m guessing by that tiny piece in the top right of the second pic that they are all black…

Maybe we can have our question defniatively answered by one of the Marine airwing guys in here… I was talkin with them not 2 weeks ago in a Harrier topic. I know they’re around!

I thought the first one looked like good old FS 36231, but the shadow was tricky. And the second shot looked blue where it wasn’t black. A pox on light and shadow! They both get in the way of everything I try to paint. But, that there Marine AV-8B (but not its predecessor the A) came into being well into the era of no more 36231, and into the time of lighter, very slightly glossier grays of the F-15 and 16 I mentioned earlier.

yeah I am using Flat Light Gull grey on the interior for now… it’s just a practice run, got my eyes on an Aries kit with the cockpit and one for the wheel well bay… It’s just #$^ irritating trying to find info on that cockpit and the only thing out there shows everything BUT the side instrument panels… but surprisinly it is easier to find what the winter camo scheme for a M4A1 in Dec 1944 was than a commonly used jet like the Harrier haha…

Oh well, this has become a matter of principal now… I’m going to find that info…

This is the best pic so far i could find of the cockpit. It shows the side walls as almost black or a dark gray.

Tamiya XF-63 German Grey looks like it would fit the bill for the sidewalls. The closest MM equivalant to the German grey is The Gunship gray(fs 36118) but it looks a little bit lighter to me.
Here is a picture below to try to help ya out. It not the best of the sidewalls but they can be seen

Hope this helps ya out.

Warlock…you got it![:D] If you look closely at the reflection, the pilot is from VMA-513…The Flying Nightmares. Looks like a Night Attack Harrier (AV-8B II), judging from the nose angle. If you’re modeling the Radar Attack (AV-8B II+), you’re in luck…the cockpit is the same.[:D]

Great!!! Thanks yall! I appreciate the research help… yep, I’m modelling the radar attack… just wanted to be sure of coloring… and I see they have the seat color wrong in the kit instructions too… they went with OD, that looks like OD with yellow in it… or vice versa actually…

I’ve got some pics of VMA-231out with us on my last deployment I am going to use for the exterior so I shouldn’t have probs there…

thanks all!!!

When the seat cushion is new, it’s a lighter OD Green. After wear & tear, being in the sun, salt air on deployments, etc…the color tends to lighten up a bit. Similar to the seat cushions in a UH-1N…brand new they’re bright red. I’ve seen them a light pink after being worn out.
