You just KNEW someone would ask (and probably that the someone would be me), so what’s the skinny on Bindex for Mud?
Well, you can’t get more specific a question than that…
Bindex is an acrylic binder. Basically it’s artist acrylic paint minus the pigment. You’ll see a bunch on this in the LEM techniques.
I’ll explain it here. Essentially it’s a strong, super clear white glue. I’ve found it useful for mud, snow, PE and even letting my young boys use it to assemble their models.
I used it here to set snow on this Stug…
Here to rust up these exhaust stacks…
And here was an answer to a challenge, suspending a Panther hull from a scrap piece of PE…
I’ve used it for mud on the Tiger where it remain flexible enough for the tracks to still function, I’ll have to look for pics (I had a movie of it posted a while back).
You can get it from most art supply houses, it’s made by Pebeo.
That looks like some kick-a stuff. I is it solo or does it have accelerator?
It’s just a water based emulsion. Think of it as a tub of thick Ehlmers glue. Dries clear, can be thinned, added to, just about anything you want to do with it. That whole hanging hull deal was after about 20 minutes of dry time.
Thanks. Do you mix it with paints and apply, or apply then paint? Do you put anything in it for texture? I know I can look on the LEM, but I figured I would get a few answers here for others to read. Wonder if Michaels sells it?
ausf, I scrolled thru the techniques section, but I must be missing it. What is the title I should be looking for?
Just got off the phone with Micheals here in mid -Mi. and they haven’t heard of it but said they may carry something simular under a dif. name.
Looks like great stuff to me, I just hope I’ll be able to find it here in Belgium too. I don’t suppose you know any other names “Bindex” is knows under ?
Simply walk into an arts-supply store/section and ask for acrylic gel.
It is very common stuff that is made by many companies like Golden, Liquitex, Winstor & Newton, etc. I use it mostly for simulating waters and a few other purposes(liquid masking, etc)
Painters use it to seal their paintings to protect them.
I have had fair results with it so far, give it a try on some scrap. You might need to thin it a bit with water depending on the thickness of the gel you got.
FYI, I am using Liquitex acrylic gel.
Dan, Pebeo is a French company, you should be able to get it in Belgium.
Just for the record, Pebeo also makes Gel Medium and as well as other acrylic additives. That leads me to believe that there is some difference between it and Gel or Matte mediums. There’s a whole plethora or acrylic varnishes, texturing agents and mediums out there. I’m sure they will have some similar properties and work well in this type of work.
I use Bindex because I had an old tub of it lying around. I have Gel mediums as well, never tried them for this beacuse I haven’t had the need.
Any white glue (PVA) would do the same job, an acrylic ‘binder’ is just stronger and clearer.
So actually it isn’t a ton different than the white glue I use? Just thicker and stronger, if I am understanding
Anyone know where I can get this?I went to Micheals and they had another medium, but after rereading this I’d rather get the real thing. Thanks!!![%-)]
Any online art supply should have it. I bought it from Pearl years ago, I think a few guys got it from Dick Blick. A Google search should find a few retailers.
Yep, that’s where I found it. The only problem is they list a 1ltr. container for $21.00, that would last me several lifetimes!!![:O]
You got it, it’s about the size of a coffee can. I bought mine a looooong tome ago for some project I don’t even remember and came across the container in the past year.
I think more gets congealed on the lid than I actually use, but that’s the stuff.
I would think they would market it in smaller ammounts. Maybe try one of the discount art suppliers like Jerry’s Artrama. I found some incredible deals there.
