Aurora/Smer/Atlantis Viking Ship

Hi everyone,
I’m reaching out for any suggestions/advice that I can get. I have a Smer issue of the classic Aurora Viking long ship kit. Atlantis is also going to be reissuing this kit very soon. I know that it’s not a very accurate kit, so this is strictly a “nostalgia” build for me. So my question is I’d like to display it with the red striped "vinyl"sail unfurled but is there a way to get the sail to look like it’s slightly billowed. Any idea how I can achieve this look?

Not sure how porous the sail is, but you could try spray starch on a scrap piece to see if that would work. Just lay the sail over a curved surface and give it a spray or two.

Thanks Bob, I’m going to give this idea a try.

The sail is vinyl, or some kind of soft plastic? I would try using a hair dryer to warm it up, then lay it over a solid piece, like a piece of wood, shaped to produce the billowing you want to show.
If it’s definitely vinyl, using a hair dryer should definitely work. It’s a technique that figure modelers building vinyl figure kits use to soften and shape pieces as they assemble the model.
If it’s a soft plastic, like the plastic Airfix used for its 1/72 and HO scale figures, then gentle heat should work, too. It might take several passes to get it to the shape you want.
Hope that helps!
Best regards,
Brad

Hi Brad,
As far as I can tell the sail is made out of some type vinyl/ piliable plastic so I may try your hair dryer method before I go out and buy some spray starch like Bob suggested. Thanks for your input.
