Attaching snow??? (microballoons)

hi guys,

I am having trouble getting the Woodland scenics “snow” to look real using Modge Podge. Should I be using this? A book I read said yes but I just cant figure it out. It really doesnt look like snow and it kind of dries clear. [V] Could I just use regular old white glue? if now, what do I use to attach it???

thanks for the help!

Apply the Modge Podge, or even white glue, to the area you want snow attached…apply it with an old paintbrush. Once you have the MP down, sprinkle the microballoons over the top. You can always mix some of them into the MP as you’re applying it too. Once you have everything in place…if you need more snow, apply more balloons, then lightly mist hairspray over the top…eventually, you’ll get the coverage you want.

Ok, I need to add the hairspray in. Thanks!

Rebel, you can dilute the white glue with water in a spray bottle and spray the area where you want the snow to go and then sprinkle the microballoons. It should stay in place even w/o the hairspray. Let it set and carefully blow away any excess snow. This way you get a natural buildup of snow. If you want more repeat the process.

[#ditto] in Belgium…

Dave and Dan you can learn about the mod podge at the following web site, it is a sealer/glue used in decoupage! Hope this helps you both!

Hmmm, no wonder I never heard of it before.

Hey Rebel
I think you need some texture - baking soda works well. I had more success with railroad snow. It comes in a tall container - use white glue thin 50% with water, brush on desired area and pour on the snow. Gently press and let dry. It can be painted if needed. Have fun!!

You can also use matt medium instead of Modge Podge.
WW2model maker also has some neat products for snow.
I think he imports it from Small Shop EU over in England.

thanks guys, I used Hair spray and it worked great!

Maybe this should be a seperate thread, but do you think the Woodlandic scenes snow would be realistic for 1/72 scale, or is it too big and bulky? If it won’t work, what should i use then, baking soda?

It would work for 1/72. I dont see why it couldnt.

I built a winter diorama years ago and had much success with lightweight spackling compound. Try some and see what you think. All you do is spread some out from the can. Comes premixed so no need to mix anything or use adhesives. It sticks fine to bases, rocks, trees and models.
