Armored train

Has anyone ever built an armored train from scratch ive been thinking of it for a long time have any of you guys thought of doing something like that.

Not from scratch. I did build an HO train when I was little. Of course, it was much smaller than normal armor builds. I don’t know if you still have to build MRR stuff like that or if it’s all preassemble.

A guy at my LHS built a U.S. railgun and the ammo car from this special plastic for HO scale and it actually works.

Tankluver, I can’t wait till you build all these great ideas you come up with. Did you
ever decide which dio. you wanted to build? You have some really good ideas.
It’s easier to have ideas than to actually start something though. I’ve had so many.
I congratulate you for starting young and wanting to do so much.
Let us know what you’re working on. I look forward to seeing some pics soon.

lol yeah its great that you’re so enthusiastic about it. I really hope you try something small out, just to see how it goes.

I have started a s.SP Armored Train. PanzerZüge No. 210 using DML, 5 Star Models, & Revell Germany wagens. So far it is about 17’ long.

As far as scratchbuilding I have started a BP/44 FlaK und Artilleriewagon. I still have alot to do on it.

The rear and the turret have to be reworked. I am using a Typ. Ommr chasis as a base for the kit as that is what the real ones were based on. No reason to not use it as it makes it alot easier than casting wheels, and axles. It a start I don’t know how far I will take it. As I/You would have to build 2 of every thing except the Locomotive. A standard BP/42 or BP/44 would be 10 wagons, 2 tenders and the Locomotive. PSP used to put out a Armored train. Good luck finding a single wagon let alone the whole train. If you have the $$$$ you can get almost everything from here: http://www.phpshopxml.com/quakit.shop/CID/aec4de1c6a6086ded8351816dc40c033/function/itemSearchResultPageDisplay/shopSearchType/familySubFamilyCode/shopSearchData/GASSPE00|BP42

You can use either the Ironside or Dragon flatcar for the chassie of any armor car. Use aftermarket turrests and either sheet brass or plastic for the sides.
Remember these were very roughly built and simple cars
You need something such as 'Russian Armor Trains" which included scale drawings
Though pricey - you can use the BR 52 from trumpeter as a basis for the locomotive

I’m currently about 1/2 through a Russian car (4 wheel trucks) and 2 T-34 turrets

Mike
PS - You will get to like installing rivets

Mark Dunk did you ever put a motor into one of your train cars. I was going to do that with the artillerywagen that i got for my birthday from dragon the guy at my LHS said the engine would be 30 dollars for the o gauge scale kind. How did you mae the artillery for some of your train cars did you use any tamiya kits for the flak gun.

Yes, please. PLEASE! stick with one idea and I want to see some pics.

(Idea no. 8 and counting…)

You remind me of myself when I started modeling. I have lots of ideas going through my head. Ideas about huge dioramas, scratchbuilding stuff, casting my own parts, etc. It is normal I guess when one’s enthusiasm and interest get together.[:)]

After building about 5-6 tanks, I decided to make a diorama and planned for a really big one to house 5-6 tanks. I made all the preparations and when I finished making the wooden base, it measured 4’x2.5’. [:O].

Well, I have built 15 dioramas so far and I am currently working on my 16th but I have never built one even close to the size of what I thought would have been my first.

I am not trying to discourage you on your plans. I would just like to suggest that you take your plans in steps. Start “small” and within the bounds of your present modeling skills. You will understand better when you finish something. You have a lot of time ahead of you so don’t be impatient.

Good luck.[;)]

MontanaCowboy,

Is there a problem with people having more than one idea? I’ve had lots of ideas and plans (which I have shared with many of you in FSM forum), but I only got around to do a few. Is that mean I am a bad person? It seems like you are really bothered by this more than anyone else. Why is that? We can’t share our ideas unless we make them come true? I have lots of ideas. that’s why I have ended up having more than 300 kits on my shelves, collecting dust, still in their original shrink wraps. Does that bother you? I still think about what I want to do with those kits WHEN I HAVE ENOUGH TIME. Are you going to criticize others because they have many unfinished kits and yet starting to build another? I though we are here to encourage and help others, not discourage them and stop them from having ideas. So what tankluver had 8 ideas? He may have had ideas that may not be do-able or unreasonable (for what ever reason), but I don’t think it is fair for any one of us to criticize him for having thoughts. Not everyone has resources (time, money, space, tools…) or skills to make even one kit per month. Let him think about what he wants to do and let him decide when he wants to do it. I sure am not building my models to please anyone else but myself.

MontanaCowboy, I have seen photos of your work and I admire your skills. I wished I had your talent. I’m a lot older than you and yet, I am still considered as a novice model builder. Heck, I wish I had HALF of your skill and talent. You have a lot to offer to other modellers and you are in a position to guide others in positive ways. You are still young and one day, you’ll realize that not all of your ideas will come true in your life. I hope you don’t take this too personally, but hope you’ll take it as an advice from one old person to a young person.

No dont worry im going to try something small im thinking of using a King tiger tank and some infantry walking by or another small one was to use a tank crew looking up into the sky at allied aircraft. The armored train is something that i have always wanted to make but just always lost that interest but i would like to make a recon train though

I’ve been on this forum just a month longer than Tank. I’ve easily queried four times his number. He’s put out eight ideas since June 20. It’s now July 31. That means he’s bouncing 1-1/3 ideas a week off of us. That’s not that bad. Everyone has “bad” ideas about what they want to do, one in eight really isn’t that bad. He’s looking to us for advice about something he hasn’t done before, which is commendable. It might be frustrating at times to have knowledge where another does not, but that frustration should never manifest as hostility. You’ll find its more difficult to have patience, though the rewards are worth it. When you have superior skill or knowledge, you have the responsiblility to encourage and help others, not to belittle them. The sharing and helpful attitude of FSMF is why we are all here. When we respect each other, it enriches us all.

Tank, you’re latest idea is both do-able and plausible. It’s very similar to an idea I had a couple months ago. I’m interested to see what you can do with it. Take your time, don’t rush it. If you want some help you know where to find me.[tup]

Thank you. I know it sounds like I’m sort of mad at him, but he is, after all, him. I don’t discount him for being who he is and having all these ideas. Now that I think about it, I have an idea right now for a huge project. It’s the 1/350 trumpeter USS Nimitz in my closet. That will easily take me a couple years, I consider that project pretty big, but Tankluver’s ideas are slightly different, and I hope you understand when I say that he doesn’t have the materials or resources. I mean, my ideas are slightly (ever so) in the realm of possiblity, but Tankluver goes slightly past the barrier a little bit. SURE, it can be done, but in the way he’s shown himself (un-focused), I truly don’t believe that it can be done.

The reason I’m bothered by this?

Well, it’s because so far, he has posted no pictures of his work (nor mentioned of any work he has done), has not listened to great advice given to him by all the forum’s members, and keeps churning out a new idea every week and forgets about the last. So I’m tired of seeing people spending valuable time replying and giving advice on a certain topic, only to have him leave it in the dust (appearantly). I would like Tankluvers input also, to see what he thinks. Also, Tankluver (or anyone else) feel free to contact me offline if you want to talk about this issue, I’m fine with that.

I have never thought about any motor other than a resin one. I have considered building a s.SP with a full interior. The FlaK is the old Tamiya offering. The barrel of the 105mm is from a newer Tamiya StuG kit. The rest is scratch built from sheet styrene and scrap metal pieces. I have been working on my trains on and off for over 4 years now. Both trains are nearing 18’ in length.

Best Regards,

Mark

Wow, that’s quite an accomplishment! That’s like! Almost twenty feet! [:P]

I do agree with MontanaCowboy to an extent. I do post lots of questions but that is because I know I am going to do it. I suggest only asking question for one or two project ahead of the one you are working on. For instance, I am working on a Sturmtiger dio which I am about 3/4 done, but have asked questions about an Apache, (what kit is the best etc), and a F-16 as well as decals, but I know I’m going to do it. To be honest, Tankluver seems as a novice modeler, and not seeing ANY of his work, one would this that only a very experienced modeler would take on such a quest.

Anyway, he said he was going to do something small, so can’t wait to see pics Tankluver!

Anthony.

well i dont have anywork to show you guys because its all in storage right now because whe are renovating our house so i dont have anything to show you guys.

Don’t worry about it. But once your done, you have to show us [:D]
