Is there anyone out there who’s kind enough and knows lots about APCs, provide me a list of some kits I can get (all APCs). I plan to collect the APCs there is in the market [:p] From WW2 all the way to Modern day M113A2
Hope there’s enough details for the kind soul [:)]
Let me see, you want someone to kindly prepare you a list of all the model kits in all the scales available concerning APC’s from 1939 to present? and what will you be doing while we are all scouring the web ?
I’ll get right on that, it’s next on the list behind eliminating world hunger…
I would suggest obtaining the book Bradley, by RP Hunnicutt: http://www.squadron.com/ItemDetails.asp?item=RH1694
It covers all tracked US personnel carriers through WW2 to present. The most current US APC is the M113A3, not the M113A2. It has been in the inventory since at least 1987 (the first time I saw one).
If you also are interested in half-tracks, I recommend Hunnicutt’s US half-track book: http://www.squadron.com/ItemDetails.asp?item=RH1742
Not an easy question without further clarification.
The first fully tracked APC is the Italeri Kangaroo kit (ungunned M7 Priest) used by Commonwealth countries during WW2. The Universal Carriers aren’t true APC since they don’t have troop carrying capabilities beyond the crew.
There are several M113A1 kits, Academy makes the best. Their M113A2 is the better kit as well. Tamiya’s latest M113A2 kit shows an M113A3 on the box art but is only cosmetically an M113A3 and lacks many of the finer detail differences between an A2 and A3.
Tamiya makes an M3A2 half-track, which is an APC of sorts. The actual vehicle was never placed into production.
Tamiya’s M2, M2A2 and M2A2ODS are APCs in that they are designed to carry troops who then dismount to fight.
If you also want non-US vehicles, Tamiya and Revell make the W. German Marder, DML does the BMP and BTR series. Revell does the Fuchs and Luchs armored cars. Tamiya and Academy do LVTP7A1/AAV7A1 Amtracs.
The list can go on and on unless you focus the criteria.
If you want german World War Two, Dragon makes the sdkfz 251 series of half tracks, i think they now have every series and subseries out too [:-^] They also make the sdkfz 250 series of half tracks as well. The american line is listed above. Did you want fully tracked, half tracked, ect?
NO…dragon does not have every 251 out there…nor even the smaller 250…there were over 20 versions of each not to mention the strange frankenstein ones-the engineer 251 with a 3.7 PaK(i have seen a pic of one, they did exist) or the R35/251 with a french tank turret…
From 251/1 A-D,M3A2,M113A1-A3,FV324,AMX VCI and other wheeled APC example :BTR70-80 and Condor … But Marder,BMP,AMX10,M2-M3 Bradley and others current with turret weapons are address as AIFV not APC…
Arguable, the first ‘real’ APC was the Ram Kangaroo. The ‘de-frocked’ Priests that you refer to were quickly replaced by the Ram conversions as the Ram tank had superior armor. The Ram Kangaroo was simply a Canadian Ram tank with the turret removed, and carried 8 or 9 infantrymen in relative safety - until they had to climb out over the sides.
Since umustb wants to collect APC kits, I listed the earliest type of tracked APC available by a mainstream model company and a readily available kit. Now there may be a kit of other APCs that can be made with hard-to-find expensive resin conversions from esoteric companies, but I figured to use the KISS principle, Keep it simple stupid.
I take your point, Rob. The only kit of the Ram Kangaroo that I know of is the Resicast resin kit and it’s not for the beginner.
The Italeri kit pf the Preist Kangaroo is pretty simple but some aftermarket detail kits are available. I’m not sure how accurate it is - a lot of the Canadian priests were supposedly built on the Lee/Grant chassis which would make for a lot of conversion work - depends on how much of a slave to accuracy one is.
