Maybe I can get some pics of the beast some time during the next week. When it is all said and done, this thing is going to be UGLY!. I think that the Bulldog that Trigger is building is going to get the prize for purposeful beauty.
Phil,
That thing is SLICK! I’ll cram myself in there gladly! I looks like it would be a hoot to work out of.
May be that I’ll be here to get them. They took Miss Piggy while I was at school and I got stuck with a bird that I like to call JEZEBEL. Broke today and have to try again tomorrow.
Maybe FrankenCopter will start to take shape tonite.
Here’s an update on my armed tiltrotor. I have most of the seams sanded, so I shot a coat of primer on it just to see where I need some more work. I added the pylons and bombracks and I have started to add sensors and antennas.
I’ll probably move on the nacelles next, but I’ ll be busy with other things until next week, so you’ll all have a chance to catch up. I’m also starting the think about paint schemes, tough decision!

You suck. That looks WAY too good and refined. I’m jealous and feel threatened by it, so I’m going to redirect my insecurity by lashing out at you. Just kidding; that looks great! Well built and nicely finished. You’re going to have to share how you did that so quickly with us some day.
paint scheme - just my 2¢ - but how about one of those metallic “lightweight” schemes like on those V-22 pix you posted?
Catch up to you? I’m still unpacking from my move and the workshop will be the last thing I set up, I dunno where LJ is & Mac’s fixing up JEZEBEL for a trip to the Gulf Coast (I’m suddenly reminded of that Russian guy from ‘Armageddon’… “That’s why I told you to touch nothing… but you all bunch of cowboys!” followed by, “Zis iz how we fix things on Russian Space Station!!!”).
It is really amazing to look upon the product of our imaginations, to the point we must ask ourselves, what if? [;)] Following this thread with great interest; will watch for continuing updates, thanks!! [:)]
That is looking so darn good, Phil! Great work so far, and you’re obviously a much better seam filler than I, your progress is awesome and not a little intimidating.
I’m still in a holding pattern, waiting for delivery of my kits! GM’s shipment is listed a “In transit” by UPS, so I guess that means its sitting on the truck somewhere. I have no idea about my Mohawk from Squadron…they haven’t charged my card for it yet, and its been about a week, so I’m getting a little nervous. They (Squadron) really need a way for buyers to track their orders online (just some wishful thinking on my part)!
I’m hoping to get some update photos of my AV-22 posted tonight. Lots of little bits of gizmology and internal details added over the weekend.
Edit: Well, I stand corrected, I now have 1/2 of my gunship. What did brown do for me? Well, they just delivered the 1/72 V-22 that will be donating its engines, wing and some other parts to my build. C’mon Squadron, don’t let me down! Send that Mohawk on its way!
Thanks guys. It doesn’t seem to me that I build particularly fast, but perhaps I do. I actually like seam filling, or at least I really like that first coat of primer when it finally looks like a whole rather than a bunch of parts. I build car models occasionally, so I use a polyester glazing putty (autobody product) for seam filling. It’s a bit of a pain since you have to mix it with a hardener, but it dries in 10 minutes, it’s very fine grained and it doesn’t shrink at all. Sort of required to get a high gloss finish on a car model, but works good for flat finishes also.
I’m not sure I like the metallic lightweight paint. I’m afraid it will look toy-like on a small scale airplane. Not very intimidating.
Yeah, you’re rignt. That paint looks pretty bad. And what’s up with the purple tint to it? Looks like someone entered that Osprey onto “Pimp My Ride.” There’s a reason camouflage paints have been flat for the past - oh 60 years now.
So far the biggest thing I’ve done for my workshop is today I bought two old steel tables (the kind with the single drawer in the middle) for $35 a pop.
Anybody seen a Roden 1/48 Mohawk kit around these parts? No? I’m about to start pulling out my hair! I want to get cracking on my escort and I’m stuck in limbo right now.
Well, maybe I’ll get some interior paint on the AV-22 in the meantime…
Hey, look at the bright side - at least you’ve got a place to work. I’m going nuts over here unpacking. I’ve got WAY too much crap downstairs I’ve got to go thru.
I can sympathize with you there, too. I get to go through that joy about every three years! And what is usually one of the last things to get unpacked? That’s right, my kits and supplies, probably because the Lady of the house knows that I’d just live out of the boxes and work on kits rather than continue to unpack and put away everything we’ve collected over almost 11 years of marriage and three little Jellos…that’s a LOT of stuff, by the way.
Can’t you sneak a little bit of building in? It’ll make you feel better.
Not much progress this week due to other priorities. But I did start working on the nacelles. I decided that they looked OK for a transport, but I wanted a little more mean look. So I used some epoxy putty to add a point to the spinner and also extended the inlet forward so I could add a little rake to it. What do you think?
If I had been thinking, I would have taken a picture before I did both nacelles so it would be easier to compare. Next is to finish work on the landing gear.
Funny you should mention that! I went by the LHS for the first time in about a month. (I didn’t miss out anything) and picked up a 1/72 A-7D for a “shake-n-bake”
build, pulled two boxes of the supplies out and started doing a little bit of work on it this evening, putting together the subassemblies. I realized that I too would live out of those boxes if I let myself and it could take up time I need to spend unpacking, taking care of the yard, yadda yadda yadda… So I’ll get to a stopping point with it and go back to moving in.
A quick congratulations to you, Grant!!! Appreciate all your input here on the forums.
Par429, that build is coming along extremely nicely! All the little things, like reshaping the nacelles and spinner, is really going to give it a mean, polished look in the end.
Those are some nice details you’ve added, Phil. Nice work with the putty, and I think you’ll have the best looking of the designs here, and it’ll be a race between me and Trigger for the ugliest.

Right now, it’ll be a photo finish, but we gotta keep an eye out for Screaminhelo when he gets back. I know he’s doing something involving Apache and A-10 parts but that’s all he’ll tell me. He could have one of these up his sleeve… http://www.snopes.com/photos/animals/uglydog.asp
