In a thread about decalling, I posted that I was working on a conversion of the AFV Club LST to an ARL. I am using plans from the Library of Congress. Henning wrote that he wanted to see pix. None available at the time, but now there are.
I used the kit hull halves and doors. I puttied & sanded the ridges & oilcanning smooth. The deck is a sheet of Evergreen, I cut the bollards, winches, hatchways, from the kit deck and placed them on the new deck. The after deckhouse is from the kit, while the rest of the superstructure is plexiglass. I added photoetch hatches & details to the superstructure sides. Bow anchors are resin copies of the Tamiya Fletcher. The quad Bofors are from Black CatModels of France ( I have not pulled the masking from the aft tub). The parts are just sort of stacked without glue to show the effects
I have not started working on the portside cargo mast & boom. There are 12 to 15 parts in the starboard one – have to be in the correct mindset to rig it. Same with the A-Frame. The aft lattice mast is Evergreen rod
The holes in the decks are for gooseneck vents, made from fine solder.
I have winches and other deck fittings to be added - when I am in the mindset
Hi. Am trying to build USS Achelous (ARL-1). Sources say it had a 3 inch gun and 2 quad 40 mm mounts. Where would they be placed? Bow, stern and ? Thanks
DDP has your guns sited well for the WWII era. Note too the presence of 20mm guns mostly in tubs along workshop hangar. They are located asymetrically, and not to interfere with the crane workings. Study the NAVSOURCE photos which he provided. There are also some 20mm scattered along the main deck
