G’day guys, just bought the Bob Lazar Area S4 UFO kit by Testors off ebay ( ahh ebay, what would I do without you?). Kit hasn’t arrived yet but was wondering if any of you good folk out there have built one?
Not sure if I shoulda put this post in the Science Fiction forum, may have Bob Lazar after me!!!
I built them a long time ago when they first came out. It was molded in clear plastic and had interior detailing in grey. Decent kits. They had two different ones, one was an airplane/shuttle type and one was the large flying saucer type. Both had clear parts that allowed you to see the interior. If you painted the big one, it would look like a giant football type frisbee. Nothing much to the exterior, it was all the inside guts.
Thanks for reply… saw your key words “decent kit”, wasn’t sure if it was going to be 2 saucer shaped pieces that fit together (yawn) or if it did have some detail. Could be fun, a change from my standard aircraft builds.
May have to call Agents Mulder & Sculley for reference.
It basicly “is” just two saucer shaped pieces, especially if you paint it with out being able to see the rather spartan interior.
Very little exterior detail. Antenna thinghy on top. Outline of man sized door and “windows?”. Arch shaped sections which require you to paint it from the “inside” if you want the sections to be visible.
Fortunately it does come with black decals for the top “windows?”
It also has a rounded cone shaped decal that I never have figured out what it was supposed to be! Maybe an open door? I lost the directions and booklet before I got around to building it.
I painted mine half silverish (I dont remember the specific color) and left the other half clear.
It fits in well with al my other “saucers”. Forbidden Planet, LIS, etc.
It does come with two alien ‘greys’ and a USAF security guard figures. I think they were pretty close to 1/48th.
The saucer itself not having any real surface detail other than the windows could be 1/48 or maybe 1/32 with small windows or 1/72 with really big windows. Or I suppose you could sand them off and rescribe the windows in whatever size you want.
Well, she arrived today, the S4 UFO kit, and…well…yeah, it basically is 2 saucer shaped bits with bugger all detail. Oh well, should be a good kit to practice metal finishes on & should look pretty cool in amongst my standard 1/48 aircraft kits.
I wil endeavour to post some photos when I get around to building it, may be a while, bloody long list of to-do kits first.
To give some visual interest I opened the door on mine and placed one of the aliens at the open door. Getting that seam nice around perimeter can be challenging.
I started model building again a couple months ago (lytp 7) and my 10 yr old daughter says, “I want to build a UFO”. I happened to have this kit lying around from waaaaay back so she’s been working on it with my help.
The kit is really straight forward. no muss, no fuss. Everything seems to fit nicely together; we’ve had no problems.
