Arctic markings.

So what’s the best color to use to represent the red tail area and wing tips. This is for US aircraft. flourescent orange just looks a little to loud. I’ve also seen both bare aliminum and painted aluminum or gray as the base color. What’s the scoop. Any websites covering this topic?

Back up and try again Sal!
What are you talking about?
I get the wing tips and tail color thing but why would a color used not be acceptable on a model?
Are you refering to toning it down to scale?

Don

if you’re talking about something like Antarctic aircraft (C-130 etc…) I’ve seen them done primarily in white or NMF with coast guard orange tips and tails… coast guard orange isn’t as bright as fourescent etc… it is more of a pure orange with a tiniest tint of red.

Model Master (Testors) makes it in acrylics, if you want enamel humbol enamel #18 might do the trick…

—edit—
here’s some pics… this one is done in a NMF with the CG Orange

this one in grey

this one NMF with red tail:

I have also seen the red called Madder Red, Chevy Engine Red is a close match to it, I saw it on a conversion chart as a match for it so who knowS?

Do a search on Google for arctic c-130 and you should find tons of pics…

here’s the site I found those pics from, there’s more there…

Testors MM has an International Orange that is very close to the Arctic Orange. I used it on a F-102 based in Iceland. It is only in the Enamel line I think. Good luck!!!

In years past there was both "Arctic " markings and “Conspicuity” markings. The artic paint was to aid in locating a downed aircraft in the “arctic” and conspicuity markings were for a visual aid in the air. Artic red was FS11136 and the other was either FS28913 or FS28915, depending on the time period. Due to costs the color was switched to International Orange FS12197. Hope this helps.

and if your hobby shop has the MM line of paints, they all have the FS numbers on the enamels… then get the bottle and compare it to the acrylics if that is what ya want…

there ya have it!!!

Don,
Relax buddy. Was just asking about what everyone else was using for the arctic red/orange color, and added that I thought the flourescent orange was a little to bright for my tastes. Guess I should have explained I was referencing arctic markings.

Tho9900, bstrump, mark,
Thanks! That’s exactly what I was looking for. After stomping around up here in Alaska, there’s quite a few arctic painted aircraft on display but the red/orange always varied between aircraft. I’ve since learned that it all depends on what time period, and also learned that some of the arctic paint had a tendancy to fade pretty quickly, so they switched to a better color.
Anyway, thanks much for the info.

Oh yeah, by the way…it looks like I’ll have a few extra bucks to spend on modeling…I put on MSgt at the end of October.

congrats on MSgt!! I’ll toast ya later, 7am is too early for a drink… (I’ve been out of the Navy too long [;)] lost the taste of beer for breakfast)

Congratulations on making Master Sgt. I had that privelege a while back. Went on to make E-9 before I retired.

Congrats on promotion to the senior NCO rank. When I was active and a TSGT, I thought when I was promoted to that rank I would never make MSGT. I finally did and it wasn’t long after I made SMSGT. That was the rank I held when I retired. I was told I was a shoe in for Chief if I would only re-enlist. Sometime I wish I had.

Congratulations!!! Glad we all could be of assistance in your quest for information. I hope you make many more promotions in the future!

Congratulations on your promotion! Glad I could be of help.

Thanks guys,
Yeah, after I made Tech I really never thought to much about Master. We were too busy dealing with current operations and deploying all over the world. That’s the nature of CSAR/USAF Special Ops…Low-density, High Demand.
I actually just concentrated on taking care of my team so that we could take care of the mission. I plan on doing my 20 active-duty years (at least if you asked me today), so I’ve got 8 more years to make E-8 & E-9, but I’m not concentrating on the promotion. Instead I’m going to concentrate on continuing to be a good senior NCO…Take care of your people and they’ll take care of the mission, mentor new folks in the career field, make sure the boss doesn’t get blind-sided by anything, and oh by the way…did I say take care of your troops?
Thanks again guys, and Tho9900 as my Chief used to say…“It’s got to be 7PM SOMEWHERE.”
