Applying Tamiya TS-80 Flat clear

Hello

I am working on a B-17G Revell 1:48

After I apply several coats of Future floor polish

I want to apply TS-80 flat clear spray to get rid of the shine

My Question is.will the TS-80 ruin the clear plastic parts when I spray over them

or will the several coats of Future floor polish protect the plastic gun turrets

Thank you

Scott

Hi Scott,

NEVER apply a flat coat (of any type) to clear parts, Future’d or not.

Flat coat + clear parts = frosted/clouded clear parts.

Thanks Phil

You saved me from destroying my B-17 and months of work

Scott

Smart move asking the forum about it before you did, and a great save from Phil…

Usually, the question is, “How do I Remove Clear Flat from my Clear Parts?”… [;)]

remember now to spray a lite mist coat. tamiya lacquer clear is known to destroy paint.

good luck!

Thanks guys

What I have done in the past is apply 3 - 4 coats of Future Floor polish

Then I apply Decals. From there I apply 3 more coats of Floor polish to prevent anything from happening to the decals

However I have never had so many clear parts over the fuselage before.

Could you let me know any techniques that I could do to apply the Flat Clear around all the clear parts.

One thing I was thinking was to take a thin piece of cardboard and put a hole in it

From there I was send the Flat Clear spray through the hole and hopefully cover all the area’s that have a shine from the Future Floor polish.

Does anyone have a better?

It’ll never work… You just can’t get a sharp edge with a rattle-can… You MUST mask…

Ever tried masking clear parts with Tape+Rubber Cement? Use the tape to cover the edges, then the rubber cement to seal the rest…

Then you just peel the stuff off…

Check to see if Eduard makes an aftermarket set of masks for your model. That would be the easiest way and give you nice results. Also, after I apply the masks, I seal the edges using Future with a small paint brush. This will prevent paint bleed-under when you spray the frame color.

Hammer-Man and Cadet Chuck: Both of your suggestions are going into my repertoire, effective immediately. Thanks!

Old Ordie- You’re welcome! Glad to share my experience with you and all on this forum. I’ve been doing this stuff for 50+ years! Still going strong.

Just make completely sure you have the edges of the tape burnished, or you’ll get bleed-under AND wicking of the future that’ll make the glass looked like it’s cracked/crazed. I tried this before, and had that happen to me. I had to polish the future down some to get it looking decent. It’s still a 3-footer, but the kit wasn’t that good a kit anyway.

I spray the flat clear while I still have the masks on…this way I get the same finish on the frames as the rest of the plane.
