Applying Aztec decals for the first time

I have a 1/1000 Polar Lights Enterprise NX-01 Refit version kit that I am planning on applying an Aztec decal set. There is a total of 94 decals in this set, plus another couple of dozen from the kit. Now I’m used to large amounts of decals because I’m mostly an aircraft modeler, but I have never attempted anything like this. Any tips for getting this job done will be most appreciated.

Hey Pop, I don’t know if anything I say would be considered “advice,” but I can tell you how I’ve done things when faced with A LOT of decals. As an aircraft modeler myself, I’ll break the airframe down into “sections” and work on that one area at a time. For example, left forward fuselage, right forward fuselage, vertical tail; etc. Or I’ll do all the no-step markings, then all the ordnance markings, then all the national insignias; etc. I’ve even had sessions where I’ll do all the decals numbered 1-10, then 11-20, and so on. Again, I don’t know if that’s the kind of advice that would be helpful, but that’s how I’ve done things in the past.

Good luck!

I’ve built plenty of starships with the ‘wallpaper’ aztec decals.

  1. When doing the primary hull /saucer, start in the middle and work your way around. Start on the bottom to get the feel before doing the top.
  2. Make sure you have plenty of decal setting solution and Q-tips.
  3. Take your time. Don’t try and do it in one session.

This is exactly what I was thinking of posting. A good plan to start will help you through. One other thing I might add, let the first (middle) saucer decal dry fully, then work outbound. You don’t want your reference section moving while you try to position the adjacent ones. Just make sure it’s definitely in the right place before letting it dry.
