Applauding a page in the recent FSM

This may seem a bit odd, but I want to call out a single page from the latest edition of FSM (JulyAugust 2025). I know lots of folks watch videos to learn techniques, but I would rather have good pics and description any day. I find it so much easier as a reference I can go back to over and over.

While I enjoyed the entire article, on page 47 in Jari Hemila’s article about the Comet dio, the series of steps and accompanying pics are some of the best I’ve seen.

Jari is specfically describing the painting steps. Why is it so good?
In my opinion:

  • Five of the six pics are all nearly the same angle, section of the build. It very clearly shows exactly what has changed with the steps Jari describes.
  • The color balance/brightness/contracts of the pics splendidly enhances the obviousness of each step. (Whether these were tweaked in post-production or done naturally, it doesn’t matter)
  • Jari describes each step in enough detail that I could replicate it with the same paint and ratios.

Thank you Jari Hemila, @Tim_Kidwell1 , and the team at FSM.

Have not sat down and read the current issue yet, but I do agree with the sentiment. While video is great, photos and text can still do a great job of teaching skills and technique. It really comes down to the individual learner, and how they best learn.
