Was just there myself, yesterday. If anyone needs shots of AH-1s lemme know I’ve got shots of all three of theirs!
Stinger, I used all my film on the Cobras for two upcoming projects I’m working on, could ya get me a shot of the Concorde?
Thanks!

Cobra,
A PICTURE OF WHAT?
You just blew my little quiz, Dude - But the only answerer, and WINNER, is SHRIKES!
Good work on that shrikes (You either have a good memory, or good investigative skills [;)] [8D]) (How DID you do that, anyway?)
Anyway, Cobra,
You can bet that I’ll be getting plenty of pics of the Concorde. I didn’t even know it was here until I saw it from the Parkway yesterday. I did a triple take on it, as I have never seen one before in person. If I had read my Aviation Week issue in early December I would have known that it came to dock around Nov. 25th from it’s last flight into JFK (I just happened to have that issue with me, and saw the article this morning [D)]). I have only seen it from a head-on view, but the AvWeek photo shows it in profile in the (obviously) latest BA livery. I hope they can keep it in good condition, being outdoors and right on the water like that.
I’d post the link to that photo, but you need to own a subscription to access it, and I’m a bit fearful of the copyright aspect of it.
Now that word is out, maybe some of the Concorde group build guys would need some pics also?
BTW Cobra - Do you live in or near the City?
Keep your rotors tracking straight and true.

Stinger,
My parents are in Westchester. I happen to be home on a 10 day vacation and I’m enjoying myself immensely. I head back to Texas on Monday.
Aeroswat,
I should have my pics of the AH-1J and AH-1S by next week. I’m going to get them on CD so I can email em. I’ve got full cockpit interior shots, plus a panel by panel outside view of both sides of the J. Some nice closeup of open panels on the S as well. Email me at Cobrahistorian@yahoo.com and I’ll send em along to you.
I looked at the great white bird while I was there. It is absolutely beautiful. I’m hoping they’ll be able to build something on the pier to house it in. It doesn’t take a brain surgeon to know that keeping them outside in salt air is just asking it to corrode.
Then again, the Blackbird looks infinitely better now than it did when I worked at the Intrepid from 1991-94. I used to spend my lunch breaks re-securing panels that annoying visitors had opened and left hanging.
The coolest thing about the A-12 though is the fact that it is the FIRST production aircraft. The only Blackbird before it was the prototype.
As for the WWII aircraft, the Hellcat (in Vraciu’s markings) is a mockup too. I had the task of cleaning the Hellcat one rainy day. It was rather amusing when I stood up in the gear well and poked my head up through the unsecured upper wing skin! The Avenger, however is a real TBM-3.
The RA-5C is one of the original aircraft the Intrepid opened with in 1982. I remember seeing it for my 8th birthday which was 3 weeks after the museum opened. I saw those angled intakes and fell in love! Now THAT was a time! I’m hoping they’ll get around to repainting it some decade soon.
The FJ-5 Fury is REALLY nice. Its basically the Navy’s version of the F-86H. The Navy adopted the Fury before the Air Force got the Sabre, but Sabre development overtook Navy interest and the Fury’s development was basically an afterthought. Interesting though, that the original FJ-1 was basically just a P-51 with a jet engine in it!
I’m really hoping that I can get back to working at the Intrepid in the coming years. With a Masters in Museum Science and a PhD in military history, you’d think I’m kinda marketable in this field! LOL… oh well, we can dream!
Jon, I felt the same way about the RA-5C when i saw it on the shelf of a hobby store when i was 5 or 6. stunning plane! I can’t believe you worked at the intrepid! I have yet to visit new york and not drop by the old gal. I’m sure i dropped by in the summer of 1994, but i’m not one of those annoying kids that open up the panels! Ooops! Taxi’s here and i’m late for a meeting. gotta run! [:D]
Cobra
According to the article in Aviation Week the Concorde is to be “placed on a 260-ft. barge attached to the museum complex, where it will house exhibits on supersonic flight”. It says nothing about being in an enclosed structure. It also states that the barge to be used was once used by NASA to ferry Apollo Saturn V Moon rockets. The exhibit is supposed to open next spring at Pier 86.
Very cool that you once worked there.
I remodeled a HollyWood Video store in Westchester in Nov. 1999. Nice area of town. It was an overnight project and our temp laborers insisted on wallking with us to and from our van during the night to protect us (ha,ha)!
Hope you have a very nice visit with your folks.

Sorry about the rushed exit, i got kind of jumpy when the cabbie honked his horn. Stinger: all i did was run a search for the four “cool” faces in all your posts. wasn’t that hard. [:)] Lots of fun things happening at the intrepid! My one disappiontment was that my folks never took my down there during fleet week! [:D]
shrikes - I tried that myself but it didn’t work. I had a feeling that it would be an easy clue. All in fun, though.Planning my first visit to the museum on Saturday. Will let you all know how things turn out.

That place is so great…
An FJ Fury, an F3D Skyknight, one of two F3H Demons left in existance, and two F11F Tigers
Amazing that they could get these rare planes.
