Anyway, I was wondering if anyone makes the incendiaries in 1/48 scale like the ones dropped on Dresden, and name an industrial Japanesse city during WWII. I checked SOL, but I think a lot got lost in translation; checked Aires, Airwaves, and Eduard, but no dice. True Details came close with there numerous bomb types, but no incendiaries. I don’t have a Verlinden catalog so if any one that does can do a quick check I’d appreciate it.
You know everyone thinks the A-bomb ended the war. After reading what these incendiaries dropped from the B-29s did to all those Jappensse cities… I beg to differ. Amazing what you learn when you read for yourself rather than having some reactionary liberal media type sensationalize their mis-interpretation to you.[soapbox][:D][:D]
The only ones I have ever seen came with the Accurate Miniatures B-25B Doolittle Raider model. The Raider’s dropped a 500lb incendiary cluster that looks an awful lot like the E46 and E48 500lb incendiaries dropped by B-29’s. You can see 4 examples (8 halves) on the far left from the bomb sprue from this kit on the link below.
So who knows maybe you could strike up a deal with AM or perhaps get ahold of one of their incendiaries and somehow make your own.
I also wish a bomb kit of sorts was made for the USAAF that could get a good mix of everything dropped from 100 pounders all the way up to 4000 pounders with incendiaries, parafrags and mines!
True Details has a nice range from 100 to 1000 I think in the bomb range, but it falls short of the variety I think you and I are looking for Dave. Thanks for the 411 on AM. I might just give them a call… they might be able to facilitate such and order… kinda like a bulk lost/ replacement part order.[:D]
As a “reactionary liberal media type” who has no problem with our firebomb campaign with the B-29s over Japan (for definitive history of this campaign, read “A Torch to the Enemy” by, I believe, the late Martin Caidin ). As for those little bitty plastic bombs needed, I recently purchased the G-model B-25 from AM and have no use for the incendiaries. Will gladly give them to first to ask for them. There were several typesof incendiaries, U.S. and British. What I would like to see is the bundle type used in both theaters, but to real effect over Hamburg, et al. These would need to be in resin to look right… Even better, with good photos (don’t have source) could be scratchbuilt with bundle of short Evergreen rods, thin straps and proper fuze.

Must a) respecfully disagree with DaveB.inVa. and b)apologize for offering to give away something turns out I did not have. The weapons on the far left of Dave’s photo are air-dropped sea mines. Tail would contain a parachute. I looked at the identifcal sprue that comes with the B-25G kit and those mines are for the Shark-mouthed anti-sub plane featured on the box top. Keep in mind, incendiary bombs tended to be quite light, and the most common ones were in triangular bundles that came apart shortly after leaving the bomb shackles. Film of planes make inceniary strikes look as though the a/c are spreading giant road flares all over kingdom come. But again, I should have looked and done my research before offering non-existent incendiaries.
Footnote: British engineers during the blitz had a hell of a time disarming German mines that were falling all over London, sometimes hanging from church steeples from their 'chutes.
Snakeskin, your right! Sorry about that. I dont have the kit or anything but do know the Doolittle Raid dropped incendiaries and I did remember someone putting incendiaries in one. Well I got to looking and its an aftermarket resin bomb. This one is the M7 and is a 500lb bomb and was carried by the Raiders. The shot of it is without tailfins and its available from Parts R Parts: http://www.kitreview.com/reviews/b25bupdatereviewdf_1.htm
…and here are pics of the real deal. These two types were dropped by B-29’s. I also must give credit to Bill Copeland from Sallyann’s excellent B-29 site. I just had to ask and shortly thereafter pics flowed in!
Starting to find the pics I need. Gotta get my “Flyboys” book back from the old man. I think I remember a good pic of the belly of a B-29 in flight over Japan just about to drop it’s load of M69 incendiaries. That oughta help.
Here’s a pic of Rosie writing a “birthday greeting to Adolf Hitler” on an M50 incendiary bound for Germany.
Bill sent me another picture. Both are from the belly of a B-29 the one on the left is from the front bay and the right is the rear bay. I dont know if theyre on the same aircraft though for sure. The files name was “mixed load” so it might just be from the same AC.
Looks like bombs on the left and incendiaries on the right Dave. Quite common for the campaigns over Japan towards the end of the war I’ve read. Thanks for the pics. Should have the Flyboys pic posted by the end of the weekend after Father’s Day tomorrow. Gonna bogart the book back from the old man for a little while.[;)]
This is great. Enough pics in this string to start scratch building if I need to… or maybe influence an aftermarket manufacturer like Verlinden, Aires, Cutting Edge, etc. to actually produce these little devils. [:D] They got at least one buyer.[;)] Post’em if you’ve got 'em!
Here’s a screenshot from the “Air War” Volume 5.4 of the History Channel’s Century of Warfare Series. Provides a great scale of the M69s lined up for loading and on the bomb cart. Anyone know what color these typically were? White, yellow?
Any aftermarket manufacturer planning to make these yet? 1/48 scale please. I’ll ask again in a few months.[:D]
