Pat;
A few years ago my wife bought me a LUXO magnifier task lamp and it is perfect. Follow the link and locate a store closest to you.

As far as whether it will help you make better models and figures… umm mine didn’t come with those features, I still have to work at each one.
Seriously though, great lights and more than durable. Mine has survived two moves with the Army across Canada and two moves across Ontario when I got out. It is still on its original bulb too, come to think of it (better check that I guess) and that was bought almost 10 years ago. The design of the lights housing has changed slightly over the years but very similar still to the one I have on my bench.
I hope this helps.
Cheers;
Gregory
Hey Pat, I’ve been looking around and contimplating getting one too. Right now I’m using one of those $5.00 helping hands with magnifying lens deals. Those department store reading glasses just don’t cut it for my needs.
As a reference and some info take a look here - SMT Inspection.
As Gregory pointed out, I’ve had my eye on (no pun intended) - something like this.
For the best price, Google and search I guess. After see’ing my choice was in the area of $150., I kind of stopped looking for now. I did stumble across some websites that offer the magnifying lamps cheaper.
Good luck.
Pat, Jim;
Check out the following links and see if any of these are in your price range.

Most of these are under $100.00 Canadian and some even offer a cheap shipping rate. I hope this helps with each of your decisions.
Cheers;
Gregory
Thanks everybody, that helps a lot.
Pat
Thanks Gregory [;)]
My Uncle uses/used a magnifying lamp for his fly tying. It’s been awhile (years actually [:(] ) so I can’t remember if he had the round or rectangle one, but I looked through it and it was great for fine details. Of course I didn’t need it way back then, but now my eyes caught up to where his was back then LOL.
I need it for more than just modeling and like I said, those reading glasses (3x) just didn’t seem to magnify much for me, only made things clear up close. [:O]
Guess I better eat more carrots! [:D]
Jim;
I have tried the eat more carrots diet for 33 years, I am sad to report that while it does promote healthy skin, those darn farmers were liars and Warner Bros too. My eyesight has never improved…lol
Have a look around at the local Business Supply stores or even some lighting shops (Most here even carry them) Once you get one you will use it and wonder what took you so long to get one. I have had mine for a few years and I didn’t ask for it so much out of “need” but “want” it makes it so much easier to see detail on figures for painting when it is lit and magnified.
Cheers;

well I know i don’t have the budget for one of the nice ones, but here is an alternative without the light

I picked up one for $10. (USD) at Harbor Frieght a couple of years ago & I see them on sale alot. Clamps to the desk & swings outa the way. They have a website too. (I get alot of stuff there)
hth,
Eddie
Hey Gregory,
I didn’t think that carrot thing really worked. I been eating tons of them since I was a kid and I’ve worn glasses since High School. The only thing carrots did for me was turn my complextion orange. [:O]
I’m holding off getting a nice magnifying lamp until I see what happens getting my hobby shop up and running. Maybe I can find one through one of my distributors if I’m lucky. But by then I might not have any money left LOL.
Hopefully one day soon… oh wait… I have to finish my paint booth too. I still have to get the dang blower.
For now I’ll have to use my wifes hand held 4" or my Helping Hands w/Magnifier. [:(]
