Anyone have a TamiyaCon report?

I wasn’t able to go this year. Had to work, gotta train the soldiers. We have the 48th BDE, GA ANG here training to go to Iraq. Does anyone have a report?

Found some pics at Missing-Lynx already. http://www.bhop73.com/models/tamiyacon2005/tamiyacon.html

It looks like it was a good event. I see Mike Mummey had his M1A1HC Abrams, 1:1 scale, there to talk about (courtesy of the USMC).

Hope you had a good time for those who could make it.

There’s always next year.

Some awesome and amazing work on display in those photos, thanks for the link, HeavyArty!

Some very fine work there, no question.

Question Gino: I really like the Brit Chally, but wouldn’t you say it was overweathered. In another thread, it was kind of stated that the crews take pretty good care of them. It still looks good, but perhaps a bit inaccurate presentation?

The Challenger does look too weatherd to me too. Actually more artistically weatherd than realistic, where would all the brown dirt/rust/whatever come from that is on all the high/low areas? That is why I don’t like pre/post shading and filters, all that artistic crap. Why can’t we just call it good old drybrushing and washes any more.

Mind you, I didn’t take the pics, or build any of the models photographed, couldn’t go this year.

There are some great looking models too, but as stated in other threads, most modelers overdo the weathering and their models become more of an artistic piece than a realistic representation of an actual vehicle. Unfortunately, these seem to be most of the style that win contests, not acurately represented vehicles.

Thanks for the link, Gino. Some really good looking models at Tamiyacon. I would like to go sometime soon. How is the vendor area?

The vendor area is just Tamiya, they don’t allow competition to show up and no individual vendors. Last year it was a pretty good. Had all their newest kits, a few oldies, but goodies as well. Prices weren’t that great though. Maybe 10% markdown.

Sometimes I wish I still lived in Southern California. Owell, 4 hour drive, I’ll be making plans for next year, looks fun!

The 4 top winners are posted… a surprise for Master Modeler if you ask me.

Fantastic photo’s, its frightning to think how much I still have to learn. I can see now why people say it can take months to complete a build.

Months? Sometimes years! LOL I wish I could have gone to it. I’ll have to start making plans for next year. Maybe even take some leave time. It’s unfortunate I missed the conventions in Japan, too. The Navy tries to make me earn my paycheck! lol - Calvin
