Anyone built any of these card models?

there are a lot of things to chose from:

Are they any good? what’s building them like?

Hi There,

How anybody who builds these kits calls it modelmaking is beyond me. Its far beyond that. Many years ago (at least 25) when I worked for model retailer I put together some card kits for OO/HO railways for instore display. These varied from simple and quick to more varied and complex structures. Being quite pleased with the results and myself I trundeled along to Seagull models in South Ken and bought a couple of aircraft kits. I think they were made by Wilhelmshaven and I remember one was a 1:33 Fw 189 Uhu. They were excelently printed and I looked forward to some quality free time. I read the instructions, reread the instructions, looked at the part and reread the instuctions. Moving on to a simpler piece possibly the wheels I actually cut them out and commenced construction and was away. I never did complete that model but I remember cutting, folding, creaseing etc to form the compound curve shapes of the fuselage and swearing.

A lot.

Try em you might like it. The vac canopies and wooden wheels on the site will certainly be a great help.

Anyone who actually completes one of these models has my complete admiration for their ability to manipulate a 2 dimensional material into a 3 dimensional shape. And writing this is a reminder to myself not to complain so much because my preformed plastic parts don`t match .

Never built any, but I bought some WW1 German Zeppelin card models. There are card models of many subjects for which no other models exist (and maybe never will), and that’s why I value them. They have a unique niche in the market for that reason. I have seen photos of some built up card models, and they are spectacular. Good luck if you decide to build one, and post photos of it.

I you like building these things, may I reccomend Currel Graphics. The offer R-100 and R-101 airships, a Concorde, an N-1 moon rocket, a V-2, a V-1, and a MASSIVE model of Frank Llyod Wright’s Illionois skyscraper (It’s big. I got halfway through one.), in addition to several other kits- ALL FREE!

i found a load of these on the ed2k network, they may look complicated at first, but i was thinking that i could perhaps use them as reference work for scratchbuilding. some of them have excellent skeletal frame works.

How do i shrink the scale from 1/33rd to 1/32. or upto 1/24? i cant work it out

Hi

I agree with post saying that this may be only way to get some subjects modelled.

It is also good start-point in getting a subject in the scale you want

Cost is also in its favour, Fly have the Horsa in 1/33, which I picked up for UKP£8.00 ($16.00)

Great North Roads Models have a very good RESIN kit in 1/35 (94.29%, see below) at approx £180 ($320) take your choice!

Hyperscale have Frank Krenshaw’s very usefull Scalecalc program

http://www.clubhyper.com/reference/calculatorfc_1.htm

which gives the following results:
1/33 to 1/32 equals 103.1% reduction,

(or should that be 69.97% ?, math is NOT a strong point for me…)

1/33 to 1/48 equals 68.75% reduction

The difference between 1/33 & 1/32 is minimal, so wouldn’t sweat it, but that’s jus me…
Scan on pc, then use photoshop or Corel, et al, to print that percentage…
or take said drawings to printers and ask them to digitaly reduce them,
& print directly on card stock for you

I have a couple of the FLY Horsa & Waco Gliders, but my polish isn’t up to it [:P]

Delusions of Dioramas here, till I worked out how BIG a C-47 AND glider would be in 1/32

Enjoy
