[:)]Hi all. I’ve been asked to build a Concorde by a friend. The only two kits I can find in the the UK are the Airfix and Revell versions, both in 1/144 scale.
If any of you have had experience of either kits can you tell me what they are like in terms of quality?
Airfix is a typical 80s kit can be good with some work, since the scale is small a goos painting (no yellowing white) will do all the trick…and proper window stensiling too…
i think you can find it with the new and old BA livery the new being a re-issue.
Go Revell…! The windows are blanked over which makes it better in my eyes as you do not have the ‘see-through’ effect. It’s a kit that appeared later than Airfix’s and the detail is very commendable, with engraved panel lines. The major, major plus is the decal sheet that includes a ton (or so) of stencils that Airfix never saw, apparently!
I’ve built the Airfix kit and its no joy. Flash everywhere, ejection pin marks in the worst places, the decals are totally out of register and the landing gear is terribly fragile.
Being as you are in the UK, you may want to try to get your hands on the Welsh Models Concorde. Its 1/144 and I understand heads and shoulders above either the Airfix or Revell offerings. Its big plus would be its white metal landing gear as its far sturdier than plastic, the drawback would be the fact that its a vacuum form kit (only a drawback if you don’t like vac forms).
[8D]Hello again,
I checked out the Revell kit on e-hobbies and it sounds good.[:)] Just one problem, it does’nt include the decals for the latest BA livery, which my friend wanted. I’ve looked for aftermarket decal sheets and drawn a blank[V]
Anyone got any ideas[?] i.e. know of any concorde decal sheets out there[?]
Once again, all help is appreciated.
Cheers,
Oggy, check my recent post on the Doyusha offering. It has it’s problems (well, not really problems, if you want to build the Concorde prototype!).
But don’t they all?[:D]
Hey Tango. i can’t promise on this but i may have the new ba markings. i’ll have a look and let you know via this thread. ( i bought a concorde and am going to do it in the old livery). i put the decals out of the kit someplace but i am not sure where Greg
Pepsi??? On a Concorde??? Thats so, soo , American???
I’ve always wanted to build one but never got around to it… perhaps now that theyretired the plane, someone somewhere will produce a new kit and decals!!!
hi guys[:)]
i built the revell concorde for my girlfriend in the summer (there’s only so much heavy german armour she can stand around the house![:P])
maybe you’ve got it all together but here’s a few pointers/tips which hopefully will help:
-you need a pretty big nose weight to keep it level if building gear down
-landing gear bays are poor (no detail at all, just blank)[V]
-BA livery: you’ll have to mix that BA blue yourself -or maybe you know the exact match? - as there is no was that decal is going to fit snuggly over the blisters in the tail!![:(!]
-i used a marke pen to highlight the windows…not brilliant but satisfactory
-the leading edge wing decals (grey broken line) is another no go[V], just use a fine propelling pencil toi “fill” them in…
sorry if i’m teaching grandmothers to suck eggs[:P][:P][:P]…i had to figure all this out for myself!
let us know how it goes, and promise to post the pics when you’re done![8D]
Yeah, the Pepsi bird was a French one… The French also had a Concorde specially decorated as a French flag in 1989 (the whole of the plane…!). Unfortunately, I only have a single picture of that one. My guess is that it was a ‘prank’ done on a Concorde leaving the D check maintenance area, as it has no titles and the red and blue paints do not seem to be applied very evenly. A beauty, though!
I saw a photo of the pepsi concorde while gathering research pics, it’s a cool scheme.
My friend wants me to re-create the scene of the last concorde after it’s final landing at Heathrow. There was a newspaper pic of concorde on the taxi-path with it’s nose down and two British flags flown from the cockpit windows, hence wanting the latest markings.
Upnorth, thanks for the advice. I’ll check out Liveries Unlimited and see what I can find.
Greg, if you happen to find your unwanted sheet that would be great, let me know!
