Anybody up for an Early Cold War GB?

Mucker suggested some PR over here to drum up some interest in a new GB, so here goes:

How 'bout a GB covering aircraft from the years 1953-64? Here are some proposed rules:

  1. This GB covers the period between the Korean and Vietnam Wars, so aircraft depicted in the markings of war service are out.

  2. Same goes for WW2 aircraft still in service: '53-'64 markings are OK, but WW2 markings are out.

  3. Aircraft that were in experimental/test phases in the '53-'64 period are OK, but they should be depicted as they flew in this period, not as line aircraft for later periods.

  4. With those time period rules, this GB would be open to anything that flew. Civil, military, X planes, etc. It’s all OK.

  5. Dates: I propose 15 May 2007-15 May 2008. Gives time to finish some projects and get ready…

So, respond to this post if you find this an interesting concept–or if you think it needs refinement. Once we have our critical mass, I’ll start the GB forum over in the GB section of the forum. I’m certainly open to others’ ideas about a title for this GB and if anyone would like to make a banner, please feel free.

Looking forward to your responses!

Whoever that Mucker guy is, he sure is smart!

Count me in. I don’t know the scale or the kit yet, but put me down for a North American F-86H Sabre. It’s a project I’m looking forward to. I’m leaning towards NY Air National Guard in markings for “The Boys From Syracuse”

Great idea for a GB…when you think of all the experimental aircraft in this period, you should get some unique entries in the GB.

Thanks to both of you for covering a neglected period in our history with tons of great modelling prospects. I’m definitely interested, and have a number of possibilities in my stash. My interests are strictly U.S.Navy (including USMC and USCG) aircraft, all 1/72. If I read you right, planes from the Korean and Vietnam Wars are ruled out, but something from anywhere else at those times, or in between, is OK? Or does it need a specific Cold War connection?

Hope you get a good response. Looking forward to this one.

So long as the war period aircraft are out, others are fine. Of course, I’ve nothing against building from those periods, but there are other places to that, including the Allied Aircraft GB going on now. No specific Cold War connection is necessary. An aircraft from a non-aligned country would be fine, as would a civilian plane, so long as it flew in our time period.

I only mentioned “Cold War” as an attempt to give this GB a title. Maybe “Post-War Aviation” is better? But like I said, we’re open to nominations for better titles…

I am researching a list of possible aircraft, give me a few days and I’ll post it here.

An interesting proposition. Your original title probably fits the ROEs better than post war aviation. I would undoubtedly come up with something to fit. Are crossovers permitted?

If it runs to the end of the year or into 2008 I’d like to join in with my Hasegawa 1/32 Canadair Mk. 6 Sabre in Hartman’s markings. [8D]

As to crossovers, I’m inclined to say yes, anything to get people building, even if some of us are building same kits for multiple builds[:-^]!

Unless I hear strong objections, I think 15 May 07 - 15 May 08 will be our dates.

I guess we can still call this GB “Early Cold War”, with the caveat that we mean this title as a general time period, as opposed to something indicating specific subject matter.

You can count me in not sure what I will build though.

Sounds like we got ourselves a GB here! I’ll move this over to the GB forum as our start date approaches. I’ve really given up on creating a list of everything legal for this GB, but will post some of their more helpful links tonight after work. Despite its shortcomings, I think for our purposes questions on which aircraft is OK, could be solved by www.wikipedia.org. Seems they have decent aviation-related entries. However, no one’s monitoring the build in some legalistic fashion–I trust ya![;)]

I’d certainly be interested, if the build get off the ground put me down for a Royal Australian Navy 1/72 Fairey Gannet.

Cheers

This is a really good idea for a GB.[tup] Let me check my stash to see if I have something suitable to build.

As promised, here are some links to stimulate people’s imaginations on some subjects for this GB. I simply don’t have time to research all possible permutations, but poking around these sites should do the trick for those still considering this GB:

Aviation Timelines. These links cover notable events, first flights, and dates of when some aircraft entered service: 1953, 1954, 1955, 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964.

1962 Designation System. In the middle of our period, the US adopted a news designation system for military aircraft. This link has the “periodic chart” of aircraft according this system, with detailed links to each airframe type.

X-Planes. For those of you considering many of the audacious experiments in this period, here’s a list.

That’s probably enough to folks started. Enjoy!

I am assuming that the panther is legal, as long as it doesn’t have Korea war markings. Is that correct?

That is correct, if the aircraft can be made in markings in the time period, exluding Korea and Vietnam War markings, it’s fair game.
