Anybody know if Tamiya AS-8 Navy Blue spray paint is flat or glossy?

I was unable to determine flat or gloss from my searches on the internet. Anyway it’s a model color I need and the hobby shops around here don’t carry it, so I’d have to order it. Where I live this $10 can is going to cost me about $35 to my door. I hate to sound like a tightwad, but it’s about the principal of paying more than triple for something, which I hate to do.

If it’s a flat paint then I may not have any choice, however if it’s a gloss paint then I have seen some “fairly close” matches for that color at the auto parts and hardware stores. Thanks

You can always change flat to gloss, or vise-versa, with clear coat laquer over sprays. (Testor’s Model Masters or equivalent.)

It’s sort of in between. There’s some shine but not a high gloss shine. It’s hard to describe but it’s not flat.

Alrighty, thanks for the info guys.

I ended up getting the AS-8 and I am glad I did. As you mentioned jeffpez it’s not flat and certainly not glossy. Maybe a semi flat? Anyway it turned out nice. Thx again.

Semi-gloss or satin.

Yep probably satin, definately not semi gloss.

I painted the hull of the Tamiya USS Missouri 1/350 in the meausre 22 color scheme. There are 4 colors to it, red anti foul, black anti foul, the navy blue in this thread and the top is haze grey. If the navy blue had too much gloss in it , it would look stupid so that’s why in the end I decided on the AS-8 as it just looks correct. Although at $32 for the can.

I decided not to do the clear coat overlay as Cadet Chuck mentioned because it would have just been for that one color and I don’t trust myself enough. If I screwed that up I could see myself remasking and painting another 4 times (one for each color).
