Any Retail for 1:48 Ship Detail?

Hi,
Wondrin if there are after market products still out there for 1:48 scale ships. Or is this a " your endeavor is in our prayers boy" thing? An Escort Carrier the “Gambier Bay” CVE-73 is in progress, there are stuff either not in the plans, or vaguely detailed for SB. Others still are down right scratchbuilds.
Hope someone could be of assistance. We would really like to do her justice. In honor of those who served.
Thanks… Ian

In 1/48th scale, you’re limited. John Haynes fittings are very nice, but are pricey, but then again, anything ship related in 1/48th scale is pricey.

Floating Drydock is basically one of the few places you can go for USN fittings in this scale.

Hope this helps.

Ian:
Try Loyalhanna Dockyard (www.loyalhannadockyard.com) they have 1/48 scale fittings from Haynes, Sirmar, Quartermaster and HR. One of their customers built a 1/48 Gambier Bay radio Controlled model that I saw at the Toledo R/C show a couple of years ago. He appently bought most if not all of the parts from them. They can probably get you in contact with this person as well. I know he had done a great deal of research and found lots of microfilm of the builders prints (yeah, I talked to him a lot at the show - it was a very interesting model)

Really appreciate the the help, thanks Jeff!
Your references are a great help.

Just currious, how does one know that a supplier’s product/s ( in this case deck plans and design scematics) are accurate or near accurate?
We had two sources to start building, and there are instances when they do not match.
Which of course caused more than colliding eyebrows, sweatty foreheads and palms, to say the least.
Eventhough, she is still a great build!!!
So far, the group is in the detailing phase; Anchor/ boat winches, paravanes the anchors themselves and the other nifty details. We had to stop coz she had to be put on display as a “work in progress” for our local Annual Open Competition. An event that hopefully would/ could promote the hobby here.

Anyways, thanks again for the help guys ( Jeff Herne and Blackhole). And sorry if I made a promotions “plug”. Hope that it was not inappropriate. If so, my sincere appologies.

Thanks !!!

Ian

Typically, if you order specific types of plans from Floating Drydock, they copies of the original builder’s plans. Ships changed every time they put in for refit, so the differences between two sets of plans for the same ship could be something as simple as timer period of last refit, as built, etc.

If you need any help, let me know…I have quite a bit of intel on the CVEs.

Jeff

Yes there are!
Check Westbourne Models in the U.K. they have quite a lot.
Also if what you are looking for is generic (ladders and things) try your local model railway shop. US O gauge is 1/48 or close enough.
