Just curious to ask if anybody here is into watching Japanese anime tv shows and movies and/or building anime model kits.
What are your favorites or non-favorites as far as tv shows and movies?
What model kits have you built or wish to get?
Sample shows such as, but not limited to: Macross, Space Battleship Yamato, Patlabor, Gundam, AKIRA, Ghost In The Shell, Cowboy Bebop, etc., etc.
I have a collection of fighters inspired in the Strike Witches universe, and some of Hasegawa’s themed aircraft of that anime. I also had Hasegawa’s “The Arcadia of my Youth” Bf 109G-6, but sold it some years ago.
I am an unabashed Gundam/Gunpla fan. Other shows that I like to watch/build kits from include Macross, Dougram, Patlabor and Yamato.
I also really like Maschinen Kreiger (MaK), but it has no anime series to go with it, unless you count the low-budget VHS movie that combined live action with model miniatures.
One of my all-time favorite mechs is the Madox-01 from the OVA Metalskin Panic. Moderoid gave us a pretty good injection kit of it in approximately 1/20 scale. I wait for the day that they do the rival Hammerhead powered suit.
I am also intrigued by Five Star Stories, as I am fascinated by the intricate, stylized designs of the Mortar Head mechs. I have a few kits (the Red Mirage, Junchoon, Vatshu, and the Knight of Gold), but have not built any yet.
I am a die-hard mecha head, so pretty much anything cool and anime (and available as a kit) interests me.
Big time classic Macross fan myself. Thanks to Harmony Gold’s choke hold on the rights, it’s near impossible to see any of the new shows that were released in Japan.
My last three builds were all Macross.
Outside of that. Too many shows to list but in terms of the ones where I have at least a couple of kits in my stash. Dougram, 86, Crusher Joe, Knights of Sidonia & Gundam.
There’s also a growing number of manufacturers that make mecha/anime style kits without a corresponding show.
Big Macross fan myself. And I agree about the Harmony Gold issue as well.
But watching Harmony Gold’s version of Macross which is known as ROBOTECH is what got me hooked on anime back in the 80’s and I’ve been hooked ever since.
A few sample shows I like and have watched over the years:
Mobile Suit Gundam
Gundam Wing
Bubblegum Crisis
Ghost In The Shell
Macross
Odin, Starlight Mutiny
Princess Mononoke
AKIRA
Appleseed
Cowboy Bebop
Spirited Away
Howl’s Moving Castle
Vandread
Patlabor (Only the 3 movies.)
TRIGUN
Ninja Scroll
Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise
Star Blazers (1970’s original)
Star Blazers 2199 (Rebooted tv series)
I have dabbled here and there with it- and my son has urged me to try some series but I will wait until he is home from college for the summer next month to watch with him.
I would LOVE to see injection molded kits from Bubblegum Crisis. So many cool characters and machines. Back when the OVA was fresh, I started to scratch built an AD Police heli, but it took around 25 years for me to pony up the skillset to finish it.
I also started an AD Police K-11 powered suit but never finished it.
Aoshima did a 1/15 kit of the Motoroid and Priss, but even though it could transform into the motorcycle form, it was really bad. Strange then that their similar kits of the Garland from Megazone 23 were really good. Go figure.
Moderoid recently did a 1/24 Garland from Megazone 23, and it looks pretty good. Their figures are hard injected plastic, so it is an improvement on Aoshima’s pre-painted vinyl figs.
Oh, and add Dragonar to my list of favorite mechas.
Two models that I built long ago which I still have pictures of:
A 1/100 scale (?) BANDAI VF-2SS Valkyrie Fighter from the short OVA series “Macross II”. I scratch built missiles being fired from one of the armor pieces. I got the kit back in 2001 (?) when I went to the Gen Con Game Fair in Milwaukee.
The other kit below is the 1/144 (?) Gundam Epyon from the Gundam Wing anime series. Only thing I changed for that was the end of the gray whip that I put a green energy blade beam piece on so that when the whip is being used on an enemy, the green blade piece at the end of the whip will slice through enemy armor…or that’s how I imagined it. Anyway, I thought it looked cool.
I used to be really interested in anime during my teenage years mostly Gundam but my interests changed over the years. Tried to get back into it multiple times but just can’t.
This is on my “To get” list. I’ve wanted one of these bad boys ever since I saw it in my local hobby shop months ago. Just need to save up a bit more money is all.
I build car kits right now, but I really like Gundam subject matter. And I am a little older, so my experience with mechs is Battletech, and Robotech more than it is Gundam.
I do see Battletech kits out there, but I think they are very small scale. And I also see Robotech kits out there, but I think I have lost interest in them.
I think what I need to do is watch some Gundam shows and learn more about them so I can form a better opinion about which one I would like to build. Then I will probably dive in and get a kit to build.
I’ll be honest and admit that I am lost when it comes to anime modeling but after seeing the recent kits posted on this forum I’m getting very curious and anxious to start one.
I am about at the same point. Most of what’s being discussed in this thread is alien to me (no pun intended).
However, I’ve built (not painted) two Gundam kits so far and have to admit it’s a fun, palate-cleansing type project that only takes a few hours, if you refrain from adding detail or painting – which it totally optional. At least these “HG” grade kits. I’d recommend doing at least one to anybody who’s never built a Ban Dai kit. The way they mold colors and engineer the moving parts is a joy to experience. And at around $20-25 (for now ) they’re not a big risk.
I’ve been dabbling in watching some of the more famous anime series as well, to include the original Mobile Suit Gundam, and am still getting used to the genre/style. I’m just old enough to have missed the Pokemon craze, so a lot of the style and cultural stuff is still lost on me, but I’m working on it.
However, I found the recently-released Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance on Netflix to be highly accessible, and pretty fun.
The show, from Bandai Namco, also has a couple tie-in kits, once of which I’ve put together and am waiting to begin painting until I get some other projects wrapped up.
The possibilities seem endless with the genre. Aaron & Tim decorated theirs like rally/sports cars and I’ve seen some decorated like a Science Fiction German Soldier from the future or “What If”.
I’m a big Gundam fan! I usually build them in 1/144 scale because they’re cheaper and a lot more fun to customize! I also really like Macross because I grew up watching it on Saturdays with my dad! Haven’t built any kits, but did some small paper craft stuff (not the prettiest)
A big fan of Japanese anime, especially shows like Ghost In The Shell, Akira, Samurai Seven, Ergo Proxy and virtually all of the output of Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli (not particularly interested in Gundam or Macross etc).
One of my old favourites is Porco Rosso and I have built the Fine Molds kits of the aircraft flown by two of the main characters.
(Was going to post both, but apparently newcomers can only post one attachment).
