Any decent 1/48 WWI Fokker Dr. I's out there (aka Red Baron)

I have been looking at a few sites, and I have found the Flyboys range of kits that have the French Ni-17’s in 1/48… But I would like to do one in the all red Fokker Dr.I in the same scale, but cant find anything?.. Anyone have any suggestions?

Cheers,
Chris

If you can find one (they’re rare and can get pricey), the DML/Dragon 1/48 Fokker Dr.I is about as good as it gets for that scale. Here’s one going on right now on eBay…

Thanks for that… I was hoping to buy off the shelf…

The Smer re-pop of the Aurora/Merit/Artiplast Fokker is quite acceptable. Its also considerably less spendy, and usually available at the larger on-line stockists. Not exactly 1/48, but more like 1/44 or 1/42 depending on where and how you measure. DML’s offering is actually a bit small, if I recall correctly, and can be a bugger to assemble.

While the Smer Dr.I interior is decidely spartan, there wasn’t much in the real thing, so scratchbuilding is pretty simple. Engine and Spandaus are actually quite nice.

The Red Baron had at least two all red triplanes. 477/18 started with just red wings and turtle deck, but grew increasingly red in the space of just a few weeks. The jury’s still out on whether or not the bottoms of the wings actually received a red coat, BTW. I think 425/18’s original scheme is the best looking (all red, including the rudder, with white-outlined cross patee markings). There’s some tantalizing evidence to suggest it was painted this way at the factory. 425/18’s later, and more famous, scheme was looking a bit ragged by the time of the Rittmeister’s demise in April of 1918.

Excellent information thank you… Appreciate the help… I will let you know how I get on!

Andrea Miniatures makes one thats like metal and resin. Its Red Barons Decals. Great kit I bet, the only problem is it costs $220!!! I have the feeling you don’t want to pay that much.

Ouch…
