I’ve finally found time to get back into modeling again and have started on an M1A1 Abrams tank. I’m curious to find out what the best way / method to paint an anti-slip coating would be. I’ve never done this before so any help and advice would be greatly appreciated!
Welcome to the site! Try this site for replicating the non-skid surface on M1’s. It should be in the Features section, but you might have to look around. He also has comparisons of the available Abrams kits
I posted this question and than found this one so oops on me[:D] Anyway I looked at this sit and it has good info on the Bradley but havent seen anything on the Abrams yet.
I want a diagram of where exactly ther anti skid surface is to be applied; than I want to use a lite coat of white glue and water with baby powder to simulate the surface. It will either work or keep the tank from getting diaper rash[:D]
This stuff is awesome my camera’s battery is dead so I cant really show you how well it looks on my current project but it is very easy to apply just brush on , it is basically textured acrylic paint and is as close to the real thing on a model tha I have ever seen you can get it at most craft stores.
Thanks everyone for the timely responses and the welcomes to the forum. I read the article that kaleu provided and it looks like the Mr. Surfacer 500 will work well. Now I just need to find it. I’ll try a few local hobby shops in the morning. I’ll post pics of the tank as I near completion.
The Mr Surfacer 500 method seems to be a favourite with many modelers today. You could also go the classical texturing route; paint the surfaces that need this effect with liquid plastic cement, wait a couple of seconds, then stipple with an old, short-bristled brush.
I have built the Trumpeter M1A1HA Abrams with the non slip surface already moulded on it so it was a little easier in that area but it can still be stuffed up be applying to much paint to that area.
Here is a pic of how mine turned out.
