Another noob question

Sorry for all my ignorance but I’ve found that the personal advice on here is far more informative and helpful than the things I can find on the Internet…

So if I could throw my noobness at you again id appreciate that… Along side my next motorcycle project I’ve decided to step away and try a car too… Now I know I’m not skilled enough to produce a shiny factory finished car so decided I’d try weathering and do a rusty up vw beetle… That way any mistakes will just add to the effect… So this is where I’m at at in my head I just need to know if this will work so far…

Main body…

Rust colour primer over laid with some different rust tone acrylics…

Coat of matt varnish to seal that… Then some various chipping methods… Salt chipping for big areas and some white glue/liquid mask or hair spray for more subtle chipping…

Then another coat of clear… Not sure if it should be matt or gloss? … Before using washes and powders for more detail…

Followed by a final matt clear coat to seal everything…

Am I some where on the right track or way off?

I’m doing something similar with a corvette (ship) model right now. But I missed your color coat (s). Was that the “rust tone acrylics”?

Yes sir i puchsed the vallejo rust and chipping set

VW Beatles ( old generation) just had a pretty heavy coat of enamel on them, quite easy to duplicate except maybe some of the pastel tones that might need a mixing. But ya, just enamel paint thinned with regular hardware store lacquer thinner will get you a very respectible natural looking factory VW finish if you wanted one.

Don’t sell yourself short. You probably have the skills and don’t realize it. It’s a lot of sanding to get that smooth finish, that’s all.
