There seems to have been quite a few Doras posted recently - so I’ll add to that list…and here’s the story so far.
She’s the DML 1/48th kit with Aeromaster decals, Testor’s Acryl paint from the little pouches (I got them cheap when the LHS closed their doors - and it’s bloody good paint, if you must know). Belts were made using solder sheet and Reheat PE buckles (they’re not Luftwaffe buckles, but they’re belts none the less)…She’s had a wash, a little fading of the cammo colors, and a dullcoat…now she’s ready for pastels and final details like exhausts, boarding step and antennas.
Hope you like her.
Looking good lee… Cant believe its 1/48… Now mine looks kinda ordinary next to yours!.. I love how you did the exhaust… Very subtle… I always over do mine somehow…
Chris
Join the club there Chris[:P] She shure looked good cant wait to see the finished bird.
Dang nice guy!
Fade to Black…
Not JUST another, mate, but another of what’s expected from you…subtle & precise.[^]

Not just another D9! Another beautiful D9. Excellent finish… fre hand? if so what AB are you using? And the markings look painted on. Beautiful. And remember, never enough D9s.
Wing_nut,
The cammo isn’t freehand…I use Blu-Tack rolled into long worms, mask, and blow the paint at 90 degrees to the surface…that way I get a feathered edge, but a very tight feathered edge.
I use a Paasche VLS double action - it’s suction feed - I’d prefer a gravity feed, but there ya go.
The markings are Aeromaster (Too little, Too Late Pt.2). Very thin but pretty tough - and using Micro-Set and Micro-Sol they laid down nicely.
I agree…you can never have enough D9’s…now all I have to do is find a DML Ta152.
WOW now that’s a sweet looking bird… One of the best I have seen. Great Build
Bud
Looks great, Lee! Very nice job so far.
Mark
Lee, nice looking, man! Makes me want to start mine! I have the Tamiya D-9 with some after marekt goodies waiting in the wings. But I also have the Dragon Ta-152H-1. No goodies but I’ve been itching to start it and your suggestion may be the deal maker for me. Keep up the good work!
Very nicely done Lee. [tup]
Regards, Rick
Great pictures Lee. One really gets to see how what startes as a piece of plastic ends up looking like the real thing. The decals look painted on…very nicely done all around.
I’ve got the ProModeller 190D somewhere hiding in my stash, but how was the DML kit?
looks great so far lee, Post pics of the finished product. This aircraft and one I just built are eagles from the same nest. This one is the wing commanders mount from the same unit JG26. It would seem you out rank me[:)]
Nice work Lee

Mucker,
The DML Fw190-D9 kit is actually very well sorted…excellent fit, sharp and even and very delicate scribing, pretty good detailing.
I found no real problems at all - it was very easy to build…I’ve always thought it’s much easier to create a great model if you have a great starting point.
One thing - make sure you install the gear bay as far forward towards the leading edge as you can - otherwise the upper mount for the drag link on the gear leg has nowhere to attach - cuz it’ll be buried in the wing.
I also found the drag link to be too short - it has to be extended…there’s a great article in Hyperscale about the Fw190 landing gear operation, and another about comparing the main gear from various different models - what their problems are and how to fix them…have a look at:

These pages explain all.
Cheers guys - I’ll post more pics shortly after the pastels and final details. Thanks for the nice words.
The camo is awesome- very nice work. That’s simply a beauftiful bird- great work. Nice weathering and detailing too. Can’t wait to see the final bird.
Leemitcheltree- love the hard yet soft demarcation lines between the 76 and 83. Did you do it freehand?
Great job! Can’t wait to get to your level.
Bill
She’s turning into a beaut Lee. Love the camo.
Bill,
The cammo was all masked. I use long, thin worms of Blu-Tack, rolled to maybe 1/8th inch diameter and use that to define the demarcation line between colors. I shoot at 90 degrees to whatever surface I’m painting, and this gives an extremely narrow feathered edge with no overspray. It’s really easy, and it works very well.
I always thin the paint fairly heavily, and shoot with higher air pressure and lower paint flow - this seems to eliminate “graining” and provides a super smooth painted surface. Needless to say, it means more coats…but if you class 1 pass of the airbrush as 1 coat, there’s probably 10 to 15 coats of paint for each color…and all the panel lines are as deep and clear as the unpainted plastic was.
I hope to start the pastels tonight…more pics are to come.
