Hello friends. Last year I entered the wonderful world of armor with my first tank and this year I present my first ship. This is the Tamiya 1/700 Scharnhorst which was a pleasant kit for my first but many small parts were riddled with flash. My next ship will include rigging and appropriate national markings. The swastika was molded onto the deck but I didnt feel adventerous enough to hand paint it! I can say for certain that this won’t be my last maritime project![prte]
Looks good. I’ve got the 1/350 Dragon version…just as daunting on the other end of the scale, afraid to start her for awhile at least.
You did a great 1st ship, and a tough one. That 3 piece deck is a bad design by Tamiya. No easy way to hide where the decks join together short of a wood deck.
Keep up the good work.

Chad,
I have the Tamiya Gneisenau (same mold), and a Minihobby Scharnhorst (Poor Pantograpghed copy of Tamiya). They do not have the swastika molded into the bow deck. Did you buy your kit New recently or is this a really older release of the kit?
Nino
Very nice looking ship. Especially for your first. You obviously have modeling skills that translate well. That deck looks great.
Very well done! And I agree with others, the deck looks great!
Thank you everyone for the kind words!
Nino - I bought this one recently at my local hobby shop but the sprues still show a date of 1975! [:O]
Very nice work,I have build my ships OOB also, have fun with the next step.
Hey !
Where’s my fins ? Doesn’t look like a 57 FURY to me . What it looks like is a darned fine ship-building job for such a small size . Good on you Mopar madness . T.B.
Chad,
Tanker-Builder is right, D*** fine. And you did a very commendable job on adding the stern to the rest of the hull. Tamiya made that a separate part. That stern piece seam has to be hard to hide. To make it worse ( “ How could it be worse” you say?) They molded the deck in 3 pieces too. More seams. This is a tough kit to make your first ship so congrats to you again for sticking with it.
I took a look at my Tamiya Gneisenau and Minihobby copy. I do have the Swastika on the Tamiya bow but not on the Minihobby version. I had started working on both kits years ago but only enough to realize I needed the wood deck for the Tamiya Gneisenau and that the Minihobby was only good to practice on and would never be a good model. The Minihobby Gneisenau is actually a pantographed copy of the Tamiya Scharnnhorst and it has multiple problems starting with wrong port hole placement and poor port hole alignment. It does come as a complete upper hull- no stern to glue on and that is it’s only redeeming feature. The Minihoibby also comes with a lower hull but that part needs work too.
You did a very good job on the deck. I like how you did the seams and the weathering. Keep it up.
I always considered the Scharnhorst one of the most beautiful warships of the last century. Manufactures must think so too. It has also been made in 1/600, 1/570, 1/400 and 1/350. If you ever choose to build one of these let us know. There are a bunch of corrections for each of the various iterations.

Great looking job Chad! I love it.
I need to teach you water dio’s.
The deck and the contrast between the camo colors came out great.
Looks great! The deck painting is really nice.
Thats the finest looking Plymouth in my opinion!
Thank you all very much for your kind words!
Very nicely done, the deck does look great and really nice looking paint job.
I nee to start getting some ships on the bench, hope i can get a finish like that.
Thank you my friend! Im certain anything coming off your workbench would look great! [B]
You did a very nice job on this ship. The weathering is subtle but there.
I have the 1/350 Academy Admiral Graf Spee to build in the near future.
Very nicely done Mopar. Quite impressive work on the decking. Sure you haven’t dabbled in ships before? Like others here, I’ve got to get a ship on the bench and give it a go. I’ve certainly got plenty in the stash. I hope to see another from you soon. Great work.
Joe
Thanks guys! This was definitely my first but will most certainly not be the last! The biggest challenge in my opinion was phasing in the painting during various stages of the build. Once you work that out it’s a fun experience. If you have a few in the stash, I’d say break them out and let’s see some progress pics! [:D]
Indeed. I build planes, cars and ships, and use a different schedule of assembly and painting for each genre.
