Another Corsair Cockpit Question

In the cockpit of this F4U - 1A to the port side of the pilots seat there are two small-ish cylinders and to the starboard side one larger one. Could anyone tell me what these are (I’m guessing one would be oxygen) and more importantly, what colour they should be? The cockpit photos I have don’t show them

The large one on the starboard is for blowing down the landing gear if the hydraulic system gives up the ghost. It uses high pressure air (1200 psi) and on the F4U I was working on, was painted red. That aircraft didn’t have any bottles on the port side however, but it didn’t have an oxygen system either.

Nearly all oxygen tanks that I have seen on US WW II aircraft were painted yellow. They aren’t the heavy tanks you find now, as they only contained 400 psi, not 1000 to 1500.

I have two photos that shows the large cylinder on the starboard, but I can’t discern any on the port side photographs. Unfortunately, the photos are in B&W so color is not certain. From the contrast shown in the photo, my guess would be aluminum with 2 thin black or dark grey straps near the ends. Only a guess I’m afraid. Perhaps someone with more expert knowledge will weigh in.

Quincy made his post while I was struggling to type mine in & study the photos at the same time. Cosidering how some B&W film handles reds, red is also a strong possibility in the photos I have available, although I couldn’t rule out my first guess of aluminum.

Thanks guys! [:D]

Am glad you got the answers to your Corsair question. This is not about Corsairs but am sure you can help me in this one. I bought a 1/72 Airifix Boomerang and the instructions gives only bronze green and velum for the camouflage. Can you please give me the nearest equivalent with PactraTamiya, Model Master, or GunzeSangyo. Thanks!

Hey, there are some awesome, color Corsair cockpit photos here:

Hope that helps.

Darn, the photos I refer to above don’t seem to show the oxygen tanks. :frowning:

Sorry,

I’m not sure how accurate this Verlinden resin cockpit is painted, but it’s something. NOTE that is is for the 1-D, I don’t know if the bottle color would have changed between the A&D. I would assume not?.
