Thanks to those who responded to my Question Yesterday!
My other question is this; I modeled this aircraft (A6M2 Zero) to be in the Pearl harbor Akagi fighter group, (light grey with black cowling). should this have an overall flat finish, or what?
Also, what kind of tape is best for masking canopies?
i could be wrong but i believe the finish on japanese a/c involved in the pearl harbor attack were more of a semi flat, maybe a satin finish.

it may be of more help than i can. as far as the tape to use. tamiya masking tape, painters blue tape, and masking tape have all been suggested in other threads. i have and do use masking and painters blue and both work great.

The Zekes at Pearl Harbor weren’t painted gray, but more of a “greenish” tan.

This one is from the Akagi.
You’ll find more info here:

On this page : http://j-aircraft.com/research/otherres.htm There’s some great info.
Its the same site as fightinjoe gave you, but a shortcut to the info (there’s a LOT on this site)
This is one I built from Hasegawa’s 1/48 kit.

Hope this helps
I mask canopies with Bare Metal Foil. It’s not economical but I don’t get creep with it and it is cuts very precisely.
hey pix thanks. was looking for the info covered in your link. but couldnt find my way into it.

I’ve used the Bare metal foil also it makes clean crisp lines.
I know that this has come up before, but what is the best way to get rid of the residue from the bare metal foil after you remove it? I know it’s not alcohol, if you used Future! (don’t ask how I know)
Just in the nick of time, jvseale! I am working on the very same kit and I was just hours away from painting my Zeke the wrong shade of gray.
Thanks for the links to the color table, Mr Pix!
What a fortunate coincidence that this question came up when it did.
Sorry to disagree with the color question ,but I think that the color of the Zero is the IJN or IJA light grey

Pedro
Well I built this kit using the IJN grey w/the black cowling. And recently it has come to light that the color may have been more of a Light Green/Tan color that Pix has described in his response. So the debate is out on this color. I for one don’t build that many Japanese A/C, though I do have a few in the stash. I usually research a project before I decide which A/C I will represent. The information was not available at the time when I built the Zero a few years ago.
