Anime Resin Garage Kit - Hatsune Miku 2019 Magical Mirai

Hello, I will make a post on one of my garage kit builds a couple months ago. Not really a full WIP log as I didn’t take that many pictures while I was building her, but I will share what photos I was able to take. This resin cast kit sculpted by Miyaya was sold at Wonder Festival Shanghai in 2022, and was limited to 20 pieces. I purchased her second-hand, so the cost was $$$. The parts count was around 65 individual pieces.

All dry fitted before a lot of sanding. The height from the bottom of the base to the very tip was around 32 cm/12.6 inches tall. Any Miku kit will emphasize her pigtails- this one took it to the next level!

The illustration this kit was based off of, and the color sample below:

One of her pigtails had a support peg from the star pieces from the base

I had a hard time connecting the hair inserts to her head. I eventually put 3mm magnet on either ends to get somewhat of a ‘stable’ support. The right pigtail was only going to be supported through the insert to her head and gravity…

After a bunch of sanding steps- I washed the kit, primed, and started painting the hair pieces below:

I started with a base of light yellow, then layered with blues and adjusted the shading. I paint with lacquers (Mr Color/Gaia Note/Finishers), and I use a lot of custom mixes with cyan, magenta, yellow for tuning.

Although the hair pieces were in pieces, I partially assembled it to make sure the colors blend. Anime kits are all about achieving gradients.

Luckily, not a lot of pieces to paint skin with. I used Gaia Notes 59 - surfacerless pink only this time. Most japanese anime kit painting would use a combination of clear pink/oranges for their skin. It’s popular to use on top of primed white, or clear primed pieces (where the resin itself is already white). Not looking for realism for this style! For references, check out youtube videos from Sukima Sangyo, Masked Modeller, and H Hobby!

Masked off the mini miku faces. I realized at this point I should have done it when I was working on the rest of her hair pieces.

Here they are finished.

This kit had recessed eye holes, so it helps with positioning the eyes. I put the bangs hair piece in order to check eyebrow positioning. This kit did have eye decals, but I prefer to draw my eyes instead. Sadly, I didn’t take photos of each step as I was crunching to get her done in time for SCGMC, so here is the skipped version:

A popular technique in the jp gk scene is the use of the enamel-over-lacquer technique, where you take advantage of wiping enamel over a thin layer of clear gloss. Anime eye designs over the years can get fancy, so this allows you to be able to ‘save’ your progress while working through each component of the eyes and refine the lines to get real sharp. At this point, I also stuck on the little diamond decals. After you’re done, I would use liquid masking over the main pupils while I spray the matte finish over the whole face. The blush was Tamiya’s Weathering Master G/H set.

Other portions:

Many of her pieces had two tone color, so for something like her tail coat, I painted the bright blue color first, then masked the bottom and sprayed the black over it. Going from light colors → dark is key.

Skipping many masking steps… I started partially assembling and happy to see her progress.

Base WIPs:

I enjoyed painting the clear resin pieces, I wet sanded from 400 > 600 > 800 > 1000 >2000 grit, then clear primed. I used clear pink, clear cyan, and clear purple paint on them. For the star pieces, I painted with a clear yellow, then sprayed Gaia’s Starbright Gold on top.

Final Photo
That’s pretty much all the WIP photos I had so here she is all put together:

She’s probably the largest sized kit I built so far, and I’m happy to have her as a part of my collection. Thanks for reading! Also- can I suggest we add an anime tag?
