I was planning on building a ancient diorama…and i was wondering if any of these hits are good
-zvezda Greek Tireme
-academy Roman Warship (bireme)
-zevezda Roman Bireme
All of them are very well detailed and excellent picks. The 2 Zevzda kits are much bigger than the academy. I’m building the Greek Tireme now. Contact Rod Millard to see photo’s of his SUPER GREAT BUILT version!

Jake’s correct the Zvezda models are very detailed and a good build.They don’t have a Persian model yet but are coming out with a Roman Emperors ship this summer.I’ve build the Academy Roman and Greek warships also they are good kits but less detail and smaller scale.
The Zvezda models are done in 1/72 scale.They offer Roman and Greek figures you can use .They also have out a Roman Fort you could work into a diorama.

The big problem with models of ancient galleys at the moment is that the scholarship regarding them has recently undergone some major revisions. The construction of a full-sized replica Greek trireme, by some extremely well-qualified archeologists and shipwrights in association with the Hellenic Navy, has caused scholars to revise their thinking about how these ships operated - and looked. I can’t claim to have kept up thoroughly with all that’s been written, but I’d be nervous about any of the existing kits. My impression is that all of them were issued before the replica, whose name, I believe, is Olympias, was built.
We had a most interesting discussion of this topic in this forum some months back. A member from Greece gave us some links to the Olympias project; those links contained some fascinating photos. I just found that thread (the “Advanced Search” function on this site really works); it should now appear just below this one on the topic list.
One outstanding book on the subject, which I’d encourage everybody interested in it to read: The Age of the Galley, in the Conway’s History of the Ship series. This book is, to my knowledge, the most up-to-date major source on ancient warships. In its original hardbound form it’s pretty pricey, but there’s good news: the whole Conway’s History of the Ship series has just been republished in paperback at about half the original price. In that form all twelve volumes are excellent buys - and belong in the library of any ship enthusiast.

Hi…looks like the zvezda greek trireme kit is my best choice…but i have a question, how good is the fit on the kit??
The fit on the Greek Triera is very good.The deck comes in three parts but on like Revell three piece decks this hides the seams really well. The deck slips into the hull very neatly and with very little clamping to get no gaps on the sides.you can make it a water line version or full hulled.You will find when you get the kit that you have to open up the hull in the stern per the instructions.This creates a problem along with looking down the hatchs. You see were the hull goes together and some other kind of unsightly junk.What I did on mine was to get some Evergreen sheet stock with the grooves in it and made a false deck.also had to do that beneth the canvas cover on the stern. I also changed both mast out to wood for strength for the rigging.I try to do this when ever I can.
I made mine into the waterline version came out very nice.Remember there are 122 oars to attach and get into the water if you do it that way.Also be carefull with the sidepods where the oars go in very easy to get them on backward.I know duh. Hopes this helps.
