An old project revisited: 190D-9 is finally finished

About a year ago, I started this ambitious project. The 190D series are some of my favorite planes so I was going all out. I used the Hase 1/32 kit along with the complete PE set and the resin engine/gun bay kit. To make a long story short, I made some mistakes, got frustrated and ditched the project. I was hacked! I threw it in the box and forget her. A couple weeks ago, I decided to open the box and have a look again. After review, I realized I was doing a pretty good job and it wasn’t as bad as I made it to be. So, I got the spark and “restarted”. I fixed the “mistakes” and kept going. Been making good progress so far. I don’t have any pics from a year ago except the office. However, I will be revisiting this thread with updates and progress from here on out. Comments along the way always welcomed…

This is the Aires engine/gun bay kit. It was pretty pricey but a very well done kit

Some office shots with the PE, scratchbuilt belts, etc.

Scratchbuilt cowl flap acuators

Engine shot before the radiator/cowl goes on

Gun mount deck before the guns and ammo feeds

Scratchbuilt brake lines

The build is looking good so far but don’t forget that your seat belts need to obey the laws of gravity even on your model. I use the bad end of a paint brush mounted in a clamp to push them into the eat while a small drop of clear parts cement dries to hold them in place.

Nice work so far. Keep us posted.

Regards, Rick

I’m glad you picked it up again, Andy. This type of build is very redeeming. Looks great so far!

Very nice work. Glad you picked it back up. My frustration projects usually see the hammer…

Some more work last night and today…

Got the cowl/radiator on. Took some time and adjustment to “line up” with the rest of the plane.

Finished the firewall wiring. What a pain!

Tried a method of weathering I read in a mag. Powdered some pastels and added water to make a paste. Slopped it on and let dry. Then, took a stiff brush and rubbed it off. It left a convincing stain behind.

Love the landing gear cover! I’m going to have to try that pastel wash. The work around the firewall is first class as well.

Thanks…

It was my first shot and pretty easy to do. Supposed to work well for doing winter white wash on a/c and armor too.

Andy

Looking very good indeed Andy. Perhaps a wash or something similar to tone down the white on the seat belts, but otherwise very, very good.

Wow the detail is amazing. Like the wash on the gear cover.

Here is some more progress on the 'ole bird…

Finally got all the engine components on and wired up…

Got the guns mounted. Not as easy as you would think. Getting everything "in line’ and level by eye is tedious.

Andy

Hi Andy,

Apart from your exceptional modeling skills, I’m quite impressed with your close-up photography. Might I inquire into your technique? Up to now my close-ups look like I pressed my camera lens into a jar of peanut butter.

Nice weathering in the engine compartment (the details in these structures really “pop”) and the wiring is a convincing touch of realism.

Good work!

Very nice work Andy. Im impressed with your wiring work in and around the engine, really makes it pop. Great work

Steve

Excellent work Andy. Should be a winner.

Regards, Rick

Great job so far. I really like the cockpit. It has a lot of detail in it. The engine and gun mounts look great too.

You’re kidding…you didn’t like the looks of your work? Holy cow, my work should look so good!!! Great work and great pics…

Thanks for the kind words…

No real skill here as far as the photography. I guess I have a decent camera. It has a close up function (which I’m sure all cameras do). Plus, you have to be REAL still when doing close ups.

I

Love

it.

I know it’s a lot of work too but don’t hold back on the inprogress shots/updates. [Y] Thanks for sharing.

Tony

Still chippin’ away at it. Getting the final pieces parts on.

Got the drop tank and main cannon barrels on. Barrels are brass tube with the wall thinned. Seems to be some discrepancy with the morane antenna. Some reference shows the ‘direction’ of the whip facing back, some shows it facing forward, some shows it with no whip. I assume the whip as flexible. I took the best reference and went with it which was Jerry Crandall. He seems to know his 190D’s

Got the gun bay door on. It hinders the view of the office. I assume the door was removable but I’ve never seen any such pics.

Added some weathering/mud steaks to the tail wheel and rudder.
