An introduction, and a tall order...

I just stumbled across the site, and of course registered. I am a Navy veteran (was an aircraft engine mechanic), and have been building on and off for many years. Aircraft, cars, and armor are my main interests.

I have a tall order for a long-term project: I’d like to build a model of every aircraft I was around while on active duty. All in the same scale (1/48th or 1/72nd), or course. The list is as follows:

Bell AH-1W Cobra
Bell UH-1N Twin Huey
Boeing CH-46 Sea Knight
Boeing F/A-18 Hornet
McDonnell Douglas AV-8B Harrier
Sikorsky CH-53E Sea Stallion
Sikorsky SH-60 Sea Sprite (any 60 kit would probably work)

If anyone can provide me with manufacturers of these kits, be they current or reasonably priced out-of-production pieces, I’d be grateful. Thanks!

Welcome Dan, an interesting list, will be nice to see when finished…keep young , keep modeling.

Welcome to the Forums Dan [#welcome]. Sounds like an interesting project.

I agree, a very interesting project. I believe I have seen most of those aircraft in model form at one time or another, but I build mostly WWII stuff so I am not current on these. Here are a couple of reputable mail order sites that you can browse:

Squadron mail order

Sprue Brothers

I hope that helps! [:D]

Dan, first of all[#welcome]

In 2 1/2 more years, I will be joining you in the Fleet Reserve.

Frank pretty much nailed it, Squadron and Sprue Brothers are two of the companies I order from regularly. Never had a problem. Great models is another one but, their service can be a little “spotty” at times. Internet Hobbies is good too but, sometimes it’s easier to order over the phone with them. Anyway, welcome aboard Shipmate. Hope to see some of your work.

Jeff

Frank, the links were very helpful! I was able to find every aircraft except the CH-53E in 1/72nd scale. I even found a decal set for VFA-125.

Jeff, I guess you’re stationed in Great Lakes?

Thanks to all for the kind words!

[#welcome] Glad to see you here. Hope to see you in the armor section.
