Here we go with another build up post. This time I am trying rusty patina paint scheme on the kit that so many modelers have done in patina… the Coke-a-Cola 41 Plymouth Coupe by AMT (2021). It’s molded in yellow, so we will see how this one paints up using rattle can sprays and the salt method. I have never tried the sprayed on over salt patina before, so this is a new experience for me.
Lots of flash on this one. So it will take some trimming and sanding. I am using Mr. Surfacer gray primer on the interior and exterior of the body and hood.
Then I painted on Rust-Oleum black primer on the exterior and interior of body and hood. I always use black primer on the engines and the interior tubs, dashboard and seats. Next coat was Rust-Oleum flat red primer lightly spritzed from about 18" to 24" away but wanted to hit all the exterior panels and hood.
The interior door panels and seats are lightly coated in Krylon satin river rock. The dashboard is the exterior color, in this case its royal blue from Wal-Mart. The V-8 is painted in hot red and the 6 Cyl. is painted in Rust-Oleum winter gray. The steering wheel is in Rust-Oleum gloss ivory.
I washed it, trimmed most of the flash and did some pre-paint assembly and sprayed on the Mr. Surfacer 1000 and the black primer yesterday. Painting the color coats was done in about three hours so far today. By the way, it’s raining here today and I’m painting in my garage so its high humidity but seems okay with the rattle can paints so far.
Thanks @veedubb67. They say its trickier using rattle cans because the paint comes out heavy and builds up fast. So I’m compensating for that with extra distance and using bursts for the color rust coats. I like what I’m seeing so far.
Making progress on this project. I ended up using hair spray instead of salt. Mild regret on not going with salt in this one, but I’m learning as I go here. I sprayed the hair spray on the rust layer only. In hindsight, I should have also sprayed it between the different color blue coats too.
I used a generic gloss Royal Blue (Wal Mart brand) over Krylon Short Cuts matte Deep Blue. Didn’t like the deep blue as the topcoat so I sprayed Royal Blue again as a topcoat. I should have used hairspray between each of these color layers to make sanding/paint removal easier. I liked the resulting finish though it took more effort than it probably should have.
I wet sanded using soapy water, 800 grit and 2000 grit sandpaper. I burned through to the gray primer in a few spots and dabbed those with flat black craft paint and rust oxide brown craft paint. I wiped the paint down with a paper towel and brushed on some black Tamyia panel liner on the trunk wiped it off before it dried and rubbed it in with my gloved hand. Later rubbed the trunk, roof and hood with my thumbs. I also did some dry brush streaks with rust oxide brown and flat black craft paints.
Next steps with be final assembly and maybe some added weathering like water streaks and oxidation, but I like the way looks here, so I’m not sure if I want do more paint work. In my test fitting, I’m finding the fitment is not ideal, so there will be some challenges there.
I’m going to call this one done. Final assembly and last detail painting went better than expected. Fitment was not perfect, but it was passable in the end. I learned a lot on this build, my first patina / weathered paint using hairspray. Next one that I weather, I will use salt to compare results. Let me know what you think of this one.

Thanks @veedubb67, for a my first attempt at using hairspray chipping, I like the way it turned out too. The dark color layers over the dark rust/patina layers give a more subtle effect. Also the lighting for the photo makes a difference on this car, it kind of changes in more direct light.
In these you can see the different colors better by aiming light more from behind the camera.
Thanks @USAF_462_2W1, much appreciated. I tried to get a color combo that may have been common on this car back in the day, with a repaint or two over the years when this car would have been a Saturday night drag car and still used as a daily driver weekdays.
Ahoy PeterW. You certainly did what you started out to do and you did it very well. It looks great and I dare say, It looks real. I enjoyed seeing your rustification technique. I think I learned something and that’s great tool.
Looks really nice. Obviously a vehicle that’s been around, but not abandoned, also been taken care of in order to survive that long. To me this looks a lot like the trend a few years ago of finding a solid car, cleaning it up, then clearing over the patina to keep the look as is. Very nice result.

Thanks @Strongeagle, It turned out pretty well for my first attempt at a rusty, sun burnt patina. It really does pretty much look like I envisioned for this one. The 40’s era cars and trucks do lend themself to weathering. I am glad you enjoyed following this build.
Much appreciated @Frozin. I do like the aged, weathered survivor theme for this car. I will keep working on my patina paint techniques. This one was fun. AMT should include 60’s or 70’s era mag wheels and cheater slicks for this kit with the mild gasser stance it has.
Just stumbled onto you build - look great to me. A bit jealous! Have never tried the hairspray technique…. And, the AI background is pretty cool too. Good job.
Thanks for checking out my post @Mrchntmarine. It was a fun project. Learned a lot on this one. I suggest using the cheapest hairspray you can find, and next time I will try using it between each of the color coats to make layers sand off easier and add more texture / chipping effects and see how that turns out.
