Amazing Panzer, Tiger, WW2 Photos and a very detailed history of the Tigers at Normandy

This guy really knows his stuff. Some great photos of Zim, different turrets… the works. He also goes into detail about how lethal these things were.

He talks about Michael Wittman, the Tiger commander as well, with a link to video. I clicked it, apparently the guy has a ton of WW2 footage available,

here is a crazy quote:

“On 13th June 1944, a week after D-day, following a drive from Beauvais under repeated air attack, 2nd Kompanie of sSSPzAbt 101 led by Michael Wittmann had 6 Tigers located in the area of Hill (Point) 213 ahove Villers Bocage. His orders were to stop the advance of the 22nd Armored Brigade of the British 7th Armored Division (the famous ‘Desert Rats’) from advancing through the township, outflanking the German line and gaining the road to Caen. Wittmann’s company hidden behind a hedgerow spotted the enemy column, which passed him at a distance of 200 meters. At about 8:00am, Wittmann attacked the British column on the main road, while the rest of his company (4 Tigers as one brokedown) attacked the British forces around Hill 213. Soon after, Wittmann destroyed Sherman Firefly and Cromwell IV and headed south to attack the rest of the enemy transport column. After knocking out 8 half-tracks, 4 Bren Carriers and 2 6 pdr anti-tank guns, Wittmann reached the crossroad with the road to Tilly-sur-Seulles. At the crossroad, he destroyed 3 Stuart tanks from recon unit and reached the outskirts of the town of Villers-Bocage. While in town, Wittmann destroyed 4 Cromwell IV tanks and single half-track and turns into Rue Pasteur. Following up the street, he knocked out Cromwell IV and Sherman OP tank, reaching the main street of Villers-Bocage. At the end of Rue Pasteur, Wittmann’s Tiger was hit by Sherman Firefly from B Squadron and he decided to turn back as being too far forward without any infantry support and in a build-up area. He turned in the direction of Caen to join the rest of his company. On his way back, Wittmann’s Tiger was attacked by another Cromwell IV, which he destroyed as well. Back at the Tilly crossroad, British soldiers from 1st Rifle Brigade opened fire at Wittmann with their 6 pdr anti-tank gun, immobilizing his Tiger. Wittmann and his crew managed to escape on foot towards the Panzer Lehr positions 7km away near Orbois. The rest of his company at the Hill 213, destroyed the rest of the A Squadron of 4th County of London Yeomanry Regiment (“Sharpshooters”) including 5 Cromwell IV and Sherman Firefly, while capturing 30 men. During this short engagement, Wittmann’s company destroyed 4 Sherman Firefly, 20 Cromwell, 3 Stuart, 3 M4 Sherman OP, 14 half-tracks, 16 Bren Carriers and 2 6 pdr anti-tank guns. Wittmann’s attack was followed by another one by Tigers of Hauptsturmfuehrer Rolf Moebius’ 1st Kompanie of sSSPzAbt 101 and Panzerkampfwagen IV tanks from Panzer Lehr but was repulsed by anti-tank guns from 22nd Armored Brigade. Following day, British withdrew from the town leaving it to the Germans, who occupied it for next two months. The British drive on Villers Bocage and Caen was stopped cold by Wittmann’s attack and following actions.”

There’s some great stuff there. Thanks for the link.

Thanks Ron!

Good video, Ron. Thanks.

Great links! I hadn’t seen most of those photos. Thanks!

The action described in the text is known as “the battle of Villers Bocage” and is probably the most famous Tiger engagement. There are atleast 4 or 5 different versions available in various books, and its therefor very difficult to find out what really happened. Personally I find the version in Wolfgang Schneiders book “Tiger im kampf, Die einsätze in der Normandie” to be the most credible and this one is actually very close to that.

Its so interesting. Also someone just built the model on the armor forum as well.

Built a model of what ?? Wittmanns tank ??

Yes it is interesting. Its so interesting that I have now collected 30 books about the Tiger tank. But make no mistake, the reason Wittmann is so popular and the battle of Villers bocage is so well known, is that the germans used it for propaganda because Wittmann was SS and not “just” regular army. I find Otto Carius’s actions in the battle of Malinava to equaly interesting, but you seldomly hear anything about it, because Carius was “just” regular army.

Reading the story, it just blew my mind. He went up and got in the column of Allied vehicles and commenced destroying the vehicles in front of him one by one as he was staying in formation with them. Interesting as well because he would have had their vulnerable backsides facing him as well, making for easier kills.

If you like stories like Wittmans, you might want to consider reading “Panzer Aces”. There are 7 chapters, each documenting a particular Panzer commander. The best one in that book was the chapter on Albert Ernst. The things he and his crew accomplished in Russia with their Hornisse/Nashorn, and later the Jagdpanther and JagdTiger on both the Eastern and Western Fronts are truly remarkable and made for an excellent read.

I agree about there being other Panzer commanders who were as good or better than Wittmann. I built Wittmann’s Tiger as the first in a series of aces’ vehicles that I plan to build. Otto Carius’ Jagdtiger is next, after that, Freidrich Luder’s Jagdpanther, Ernst Barkmann’s Panther, Carius’ Tiger I, Hugo Primozic’s StuG III, Jochaim Pieper’s King Tiger, and Werner Wolff’s Pz IV. More or less in that order. All to show I am thoroughly sick of everybody building Wittmann’s Tiger and forgetting about the others. My personal favorite is Werner Wolff - during the battle of Kursk he destroyed two T-34’s that were attacking him from less than 20 yards with a 3.7cm PaK mounted in his SdKfz 251 Halftrack, and later the same day destroyed an attacking T-34 with a magnetic anti tank mine. That night he killed a Soviet general in hand to hand combat with the general’s own dagger. Kill tallies in the 150’s isn’t all that makes a great commander…

Nice Tiger, I was the first to comment on it [;)]

I hear what you’re saying Hermes. I’m starting to do something similar. After I wrap up a few of my GBs and some of the tanks I’m working on, I want to do the 1/35 Dragon Hornisse/Nashorn as one that Albert Ernst used during the battles around Vitebsk during December of 1943. His exploits earned him of “The Tiger of Vitebsk”.

I’ve already started the research, and am looking for pictures of the Hornisse/Nashorn, and would be very interested if anyone can direct me to photos of any of them serving with the 519 Heavy Tank Destroyer Battalion. [8D]

I too would like to build a series of “Panzer Aces” but I have a hard time finding good reference photos, tank numbers etc… for their various vehicles.

I have suggested to several dry transfer makers to do a panzer ace series. Each decal sheet would be of one panzer ace and would provide markings for 4 or 5 of the different tanks they commanded. Maybe if they recieved more requests it might happen-hint, hint.

I have already figured out most of the turret numbers and paint details for the above aces, if you want to know.

If you don’t mind, I’d love to take advantage of your research! [8D] [:D]

**Michael Wittman-**Villers-Bocage

Tiger I Late, most likely 231. Dunkelgelb with very narrow green and brown “squiggle” camo.It was definitely not 222 since there is a pic of a very pristine 222 pulling KO’d 231 after the battle of V-B. Possibly 212 because of its KO’d location, but more likely 231. 231 has no star antenna, large muzzle brake, no cupola AA gun, overall small zimmerit pattern. LAH Emblem painted over Zimmerit. Red/white bordered numbers.

**Otto Carius-**Malinava

Tiger I Mid, large turret zim, small hull zim. No cupola AA gun, star antenna. Overall dark yellow, outer front road wheel on each side removed. Turret 217, white stencil numbering. White sPzAbt 502 elephant stencil painted over zimmerit.

**Hugo Primozic-**Eastern Front

StuG III G 75mm, Turret # unknown, Overall dunkelgelb, with green squiggle/mottle pattern (so it looks rather like yellow spots on green) 75ish white rings on barrel. StuG Abt 667 logo on right front glacis.

I’ll post some more later.

I have been re-reading Carlo D’Este’s “Decision in Normandy” and this situation just was covered. It is interesting from the startegic view as well. The British 7th Armor Division was making a push to flank the German positions at Caen. There was a gap in the lines that the “Desert Rats” punched through to threatened the German positions. Wittman and his men were thrown in to stiffen the line. They ended up destroying most of the supporting infantry of the 7th Armor supporting the forward units as well as a lot of armor. Infantry losses were so acute that the British armor couldn’t hold the ground gained. Add to that some indecisions made at division and higher levels and the slowness of getting units ashore.

For the entire British Army infantry replacements were in very short supply at this time. Sources of trained infantry men had dried up causing units to be cannablized for replacements. Alot of controversy came out of these various battles around Caen which make good reading.

Thank you very much, I appreciate it! [:)]

Do you have any info on Albert Ernst’s Nashorn’s, JagdPanther or JagdTiger?

Panzer Aces sounds like a fantastic group build that I would partake on. Guys like me, that are relatively new and not that knowledgeable about the details would need that extra bit of knowledge. Like what kit to buy and what PE kits to buy, then the decals… etc.

A couple of you guys sharing the info on kits and decal sets… organizing custom decal sheets for us maybe, something like that. What an impressive set of tanks to display when done.

That sort of GB would take about a year or so.

But, I would do any icons or photoshop / badge work…

That’s an excellent idea!! I’d be more than happy to sponser/set it up to start this upcoming spring or summer. [:D] I created a “recon” post to see if there is enough interest, if so then I’ll put it together. /forums/721851/ShowPost.aspx#721851
