Mate,
In truth, Aluminium Dope looks like silver paint - it’s normally a semi-gloss or gloss fairly bright aluminium color, or a glossy dull silver color.
The P-51’s (or CAC 18’s) that they made at Fisherman’s Bend in Melbourne were mostly all painted silver - so a dull silver is the norm for these birds. Do a Google search for Australian built Mustangs or CA-18 or CAC-18…you should be able to see what a aluminium dope painted plane looks like.
Most of the Model Master Aluminium colors, buffing or non buffing should do just fine - but remember, they’re somewhat delicate - they don’t like it when you mask over them.
Alclad would be a good alternative - easy to use and fairly bullet proof. You can get it from Snowy Mountain Models in Altona (I think it’s Altona - see http://www.smmodels.com/ ). Kind of expensive, but it’s every bit as good as they say it is. That’s where I got mine.
Good luck - cheers, brother.

If it was a French Aircraft they carry FR01 FRENCH ALUMINIUM if it is a German Aircraft they carry a GC17 PFALZ SILBERGRAU if it’s a Austro-Hungarian Plane they would have AH08 PLATINUM GREY to name a few?
What you have to remember is that aluminum dope is not an NMF, but rather a metalic coating applied over the fabric surface (dope won’t hold for any length of time on a metal surface). It’s basicly a mixture of clear dope and powdered aluminum. You can either buy it pre-mixed or mix your own (prefered because you can mix exactly the amount you need which cuts down on cost and wastage). It’s function is to cut down on damage caused by ultrviolet rays to fabrics. It’s applied to all fabric surfaces, even those that are to be covered with a color coat. On an aircraft that has been in service for a time, the surfrace will be dull or semi-gloss which is caused by weathering.
