how about a really lucky soviet conscript with a mosin-nagant that shot down 5 nazi planes? [:D]
Ok I might be in. Depending on whether i finish everything else in time for this or depending on if i have to start before the date.[:D]
Well ill probably be joing with Marion E. Carl, USMC, 18.5 kills, F4F-4 flying with VMF-223.
Greetings from Sunny Albuquerque!!!
Just a quick observation here…even though most of it may be in kest…an “Ace” is in an Airplane…straight forward and simple enough…all of the other aces, tank, sub whatever got this handle because of the men in the air!
if i remember wasn’t there a SBD Dauntless pilot that made ace i think his nickname was “Swede” and his last name began with a V i remember reading a book when i was a wee lad that he made ace defending his carrier.when no fighters were available he and another dauntless took off to defend the carriers. i think maybe it was at the battle of the coral sea
I will be building a 1/48 scale P-51D flown by col. John Landers. He is credited with 14.5 victories. Also, how do I put a badge in my signature?
Happy new year folks! I’ve been away thinking of other things besides modeling. PZL and ygmodler, I’ll add you to the front.
Joe Rugby, you are 100% correct, for this build an ace referes to some one in a airpane, not an AA gun crew or other such group. Tail/rear Gunners are accepted as in WW1 there were many “ace” teams that flew combat aircraft, like the Bristol F2B.
I would like to join in on the fun,if thats ok.Let me check to see what ill use.Ill get back at you tomorrow.
Glad to have you back Nick. Just let me know when you have decided on your build and I’ll add it to your name on the front page.
Well I just about went and got the little Academy 1:72 Spad XIII the other day. I thought there weren’t enough WW1 aces represented yet and I thought about doing George Guynemer’s Spad “Vieux Charles”. I didn’t get it but that’s not to say I still won’t, theres plenty of time.[;)]
Well my kit is here and ready to go, funnything is i ordered the Eduard Profipac sopwith triplane from snowy mountain models but they seemed to be dragging their heels and when i came across the kit for $40:00 at the last model expo i snapped it up and wouldn’t you know it i’ve just recieved the kit in the mail so now i have 2 triplanes, but it’s all good the eduard WW1 kits are fantastic, much better than Roden and i’m sure i’ll find the time to eventually make the second one…
Anyhows i’ll be finishing the kit in the markings for Australias highest ever scoring fighter pilot or scout ace as they called them back them, Robert Alexander Little, i seem to have misplaced my book so here is what i remember of him from the top of my head…
R A Little was born in Hawthorn Victoria, when the war broke out he tried to join the AFC but thought his chances were thin given the amount of applicants for only a dozen places so he paid for a passage to England and joined the RNAS, from here on he flew over the western front increasing his score rapidly flying a number of different machines including 2 triplanes, during 1918 he took off in a Sopwith Camel at night to intercept a formation of Gotha bombers which he attacked but was hit from defensive fire from a Gotha, shot through both thighs he managed an emergncy landing but bled to death before he was found, his final score was 47 confirmed victories…
Well thats about it when i find my book which profiles all Aussie aces with 5 or more victories from WW1 and WW2 i’ll post up some more history including his victory sheet and a pic of himself…
Hello Jules, I’m putting together a collection of all the major contributing countries top aces aircraft of ww1 in 1/32 and I’m looking for a pic of Little’s Camel so I can accurately represent it. I dont know if they do his decals in 1/32 but I figure if I can find a pic I can replicate them easy enough. I was wondering if you know where I can find a pic or if you have one you can post or email to me. Anyway I’m stoked to be in on my first group build, any help you can give me would be great. Thanks, TL
I’m tossing up at the moment on which decal maker to choose for my build. I can go for either Cutting Edge Modelworks or Lifelike Decals. Does anybody have any experience with either of these manufacturers that can be if either or both are OK.
Cheers
Darren, I can’t recall ever using any Lifelike decals, but I have used several of Cutting Edge sheets. They are very good quality, right up there with Aeromaster & Eagle Strike.
Regards, Rick
Thanks for that Rick, if the quality of their decals are good then I think I will stick to Cutting Edge as they are a little cheaper than Lifelike and I have dealt with the Meteor Production guys before (for resin and masks) and have had no worries.
Cheers Darren
Im in with Revellograms 1/48 Spit Mk.II flow by Douglas Bader with 23 Kills.
[#welcome]Willjanuary, I got you on the front page.
hey Jay i finally figured out what to build I’m going with Lt Lilya Litvyak’s Yak-1 Yellow 44 of the 296 IAP at stalingrad spring 1943 She was known as “The White Rose of Stalingrad” with 12 kills confirmed and another 8 ? probables ( I have conflicting information on the # of probables ) she was killed in action when german fighters recognizing the white flower in the side of her cockpit jumped her with 8 Me 109’s she got 2 of them before finally falling to their superior numbers she recived the Order of the Red Banner and in 1990 she was conferred the title of Hero of the Soviet Union by premier Mikhail Gorbachov
yes a woman ace,Still a brave and beautiful woman
Cool PanzerWulf, I was wondering if anyone would build one of the Soviet Lady Aces. I have added you to the front page.[tup]
