All Systems Are Go!

Today, May 5th, is the 65th anniversary of Alan Shepards flight aboard “Freedom 7”, becoming the first American in Space. I managed to complete this representation of the Mercury / Redstone rocket today to celebrate this historic achievement in spaceflight.

This is a resin 1/144 scale model from Realspace Models I picked up for a song, since the launch tower probe was broken on the escape tower. I repaired it using a pin and some glue.

When reporters asked Shepard what he thought about as he sat atop the Redstone rocket, waiting for liftoff, he had replied, ‘The fact that every part of this ship was built by the lowest bidder.’

Thanks for looking!

Great looking build. And the Mercury capsule was tiny… couldn’t imagine. Brave, brave individuals!
